Mr. Gunn, an established attorney, had enjoyed a tenured career spanning more than three decades in health care law, earning recognition as an expert in the field. Since 2010, he has served as a health care attorney at the Healthcare Law Offices of Jonathan S. Gunn in Utah, where he primarily manages physician employment contracts and provides counsel on emergency medical services regulation and enforcement. Mr. Gunn’s practice includes consulting with the state of Illinois and representing individuals involved in regulatory enforcement actions against hospitals, trauma centers, paramedics and ambulance services. Over the course of his legal career, Mr. Gunn has handled more than 700 physician employment contracts, underscoring his extensive experience and trusted reputation.
Aside from his work in the field, Mr. Gunn is a dedicated college instructor at Rush University and Northwestern University, where he has been imparting his knowledge to future leaders in health care.
From 2008 to 2020, Mr. Gunn was an assistant general counsel for the Illinois Department of Public Health in Chicago, Illinois. In this capacity, he contributed to the development and enforcement of health care regulations, including health care investigations and regulatory and enforcement actions specific to hospitals, trauma centers, emergency medical services and more.
Mr. Gunn excelled as a malpractice defense litigator at Hughes, Hill & Tenney LLC in Decatur, Illinois, between 2001 and 2007. This role involved defending physicians in malpractice lawsuits. Mr. Gunn simultaneously maintained a private law practice between 1996 and 2020, which was limited to physician employment agreements and emergency medical services.
Before entering the legal field, Mr. Gunn spent five years as a new product development manager for critical care medical products at Hewlett-Packard. There, he led a team of over 15 engineers to launch a critical care transport monitor, a significant milestone for the company that demonstrated his leadership and innovation in medical technology.
Mr. Gunn’s early professional journey began as a flight paramedic from 1981 to 1983. He achieved distinction as the first paramedic in Clark County, Nevada, history to receive a pass with distinction honors for reciprocity. Additionally, Mr. Gunn was an advanced cardiac life support instructor with the American Heart Association for over 15 years, sharing his expertise with other health care professionals and contributing to improved emergency response outcomes.
Instrumental in shaping his multifaceted career, Mr. Gunn completed mobile intensive care coursework at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1980 before transferring to Drake University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and government in 1981. Returning to college years later, he completed a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Illinois in 1994. Mr. Gunn was admitted to practice by the Illinois Bar Association and the Supreme Court of Illinois. He also holds certifications as an advanced cardiac life support instructor from the American Heart Association, as a mobile intensive care paramedic from the state of Kansas, and as a certified paramedic in both Iowa and Nevada. Additionally, Mr. Gunn is recognized as a pediatric advanced life support provider by the University of Iowa Health Care.
Beyond his legal practice, Mr. Gunn has become involved in authorship and editorial work. He authored legal materials on premises liability and medical malpractice for the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education. His article, “Petrillo Releases,” was published by the DuPage County Bar Journal. Additionally, Mr. Gunn edited a book chapter on physician employment contracts for Thomson Reuters Legal Encyclopedia.
Throughout his career, Mr. Gunn has demonstrated unwavering commitment to excellence across clinical practice, product development, legal advocacy and education. He intends to continue focusing on physician employment contracts and does not anticipate significant changes to his established path.
