John French, III, Lawyer and Director of Tudor Associates LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Environmental Law.

Mr. French is considered a pioneer in the formation of environmental law in the U.S., and received an award from the New York State Bar Association for his accomplishments in the field. He became involved in his profession because there have been lawyers in his family for generations, so it was something that he had always wanted to do. Since 1999, Mr. French has led Tudor Associates as its chairman, and as recently as 2010 he taught at his alma mater, Dartmouth College. He is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and has appeared in the pages of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the East, and Who’s Who in the World.

Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Mr. French was born to John and Rhoda French and attended Dartmouth to earn a BA in 1955. He completed a JD at Harvard University, and served the U.S. Air Force in the Advocate General Corps to the rank of captain judge from 1958 to 1961. He arrived in New York that year as an associate of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, serving in a string of successful counsel positions until becoming vice president and general counsel of the Peabody International Corporation in Stamford, Connecticut. Mr. French returned to New York in 1982 as partner of Appleton, Rice, and Perrin, and soon partnered with Beveridge & Diamond PC, which named him of counsel from 1993 to 1999.

In addition to law and lecturing, Mr. French has also branched out into artistic and scientific patronage on the board of directors of the Smithsonian Institution and the Philharmonic Society. He is a director and president of the Salzburg Festival Society, and had a hand in the board of Resorts Management Inc. As for environmental law, Mr. French did much of his work as a board member of the Department of Environmental Conservation of New York State from 1976 to 1988, later serving in a number of regional groups. He is also the proud father of John B., Lawrence C., Daniel J., and Susann.
