Inspired by her parents’ successful immigration stories and her grandfather’s aspiration to secure legal residency in the U.S., Ms. Cancio chose to dedicate her professional life to helping others navigate the complexities of immigration law.
Since 2023, Ms. Cancio has served as the managing attorney at The Law Offices of Nelsis G. Rojas PLLC in Miami Lakes, Florida. In this role, she conducts client consultations, ensures detailed case analysis, handles court work, and oversees firm applications while managing her team and representing clients nationwide. Under Ms. Cancio’s leadership, the firm has expanded its services across the country and opened a new office in Miami Lakes.
Ms. Cancio’s earlier career milestones included serving as a law clerk at Del Pino & Associates PA in Coral Gables, Florida, while working toward her law degree from 2021 to 2023, where she gained valuable experience supporting attorneys with research and case preparation. Earlier, in 2022, she was a summer intern at the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office in Miami, Florida, where she broadened her understanding of legal advocacy. From 2021 to 2022, Ms. Cancio acted as a law student representative for the immigration clinic at the college of law at St. Thomas University. Concurrently between 2021 and 2022, she clerked for Eric J. Grabois, P.L., Attorney-at-Law. Additionally, she completed a legal internship with PereGonza, The Attorneys, in Miami in 2021.
Apart from her internships and clerkships, Ms. Cancio’s foundational experience in law included working as an immigration paralegal with Michelle C. Sanchez PA in Miami Springs from 2018 to 2019. She held the same role at the Law Firm of Joseph R. Lackey LLC between 2019 and 2020.
Ms. Cancio’s academic background has been instrumental in shaping her success. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a minor in international relations, magna cum laude, from Florida International University in Miami in 2019 before earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the college of law at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens in 2023. These academic achievements provided Ms. Cancio with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for her legal practice.
In addition to her degrees, Ms. Cancio holds several certifications that have enhanced her proficiency as an attorney, including Essential Legal Research from Thomas Reuters, as well as Lexis+ Practice-Ready certification and LexisNexis Proficiency certification from LexisNexis. These credentials reflect her commitment to staying current with evolving legal research tools and methodologies.
Active involvement in professional organizations has been another hallmark of Ms. Cancio’s career. She has served as the secretary for the Children and Family Law Society and as the communications chair for the Maritime Law Society while also participating in the Criminal Law Society during her academic tenure. Ms. Cancio’s memberships extend to prominent industry groups such as the Cuban American Bar Association, the Cuban American Student Bar Association and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Earlier, as the president of both the Hispanic American Law Student Association and the Immigration Law Students Association at the college of law at St. Thomas University, she demonstrated leadership among peers committed to diversity and advocacy within the legal community.
Ms. Cancio’s dedication extends beyond her professional duties into civic engagement and community service. Through selective pro bono services offered by her firm, she assists clients facing difficult circumstances who might otherwise lack access to legal representation. Ms. Cancio is also an active supporter of crisis relief efforts for Cuba and Venezuela. Additionally, a commitment to education remains central to Ms. Cancio’s mission. She maintains an active social media presence on TikTok and Instagram where she creates educational content tailored for Latin community members and Spanish speakers arriving in the U.S. with limited knowledge of immigration processes.
