With more than four decades of experience in the legal profession, Ms. Bowers has distinguished herself as a leading authority in the defense of hospitals and healthcare providers facing medical negligence claims. Since 2005, she has served as the president and owner of Piper & Bowers P.S.C. in Lexington, Kentucky. In this capacity, she oversees firm operations while ensuring comprehensive coverage of casework, collaboration with attorneys on complex litigation matters, participation in the defense of medical negligence cases, and management of mediations and trial preparations, including expert witness coordination. Ms. Bowers’ expertise encompasses medical negligence defense for hospitals and healthcare providers, healthcare risk management, risk profiling and adverse occurrence prevention, and civil litigation defense and compliance work for medical institutions.

Ms. Bowers is particularly proud that her firm has consistently guided clients through the litigation process with a sense of comfort and security. Rather than focusing on a single milestone, she finds fulfillment in knowing her team provides steadfast protection for their clients’ interests throughout each case. Ms. Bowers’ approach is set apart by a unique combination of early education and extensive experience in clinical pathology. This background has given her significant contact with physicians and enriched her understanding of medical issues central to her practice. The diversity of cases she manages continues to shape her perspective and allows her to address each matter with a depth of insight valued by clients and colleagues alike.

Having begun her legal career at Martin, Ockerman & Brabant in Lexington following her graduation from law school in 1983, Ms. Bowers initially joined the firm as an attorney, focusing on defending hospitals, physicians and nurses from the outset. She advanced to partner at the firm from 1989 to 1990 before co-founding Piper, Wellman & Bowers in 1990. Over the next 15 years as a partner there, Ms. Bowers helped establish a reputation for excellence in medical defense litigation. In 2005, she assumed her current role as the president and owner when the firm evolved into Piper & Bowers P.S.C.

Before entering law, Ms. Bowers built a foundation in science and medicine that would later inform her legal practice. From 1977 to 1980, she served as an assistant professor of clinical chemistry and serology at The University of New Mexico in Albuquerque while her husband completed surgical training. Earlier still, Ms. Bowers worked as a medical technologist at IU Health Methodist Hospital between 1975 and 1977 before becoming a technical supervisor and director of the clinical serology division within the department of clinical pathology at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis.

Ms. Bowers’ academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science at Indiana University in Bloomington in 1975 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Kentucky in Lexington in 1983. She was admitted to practice by the Kentucky Bar Association, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the U.S. District Courts. Ms. Bowers also received certification as a medical technologist from the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Ms. Bowers’ professional affiliations reflect her commitment to advancing standards within her field. She has held the roles of board member of both the Kentucky Academy of Healthcare Attorneys and the Kentucky Hospital Association. She also holds membership with the Fayette County Bar Association, the Kentucky Bar Association, the Kentucky Society for Healthcare Risk Management, the Kentucky Defense Counsel and the Society of Human Resource Management. Throughout her legal career, Ms. Bowers has been recognized as an expert in her field as a designated lecturer for various hospitals, medical staffs and medico-legal societies.

Civic engagement has been another defining aspect of Ms. Bowers’ career. She serves as an emeritus board member for The Nest – Center for Women, Children and Families in Lexington, where she continues to support its mission. Her community involvement extends to activities through her church as well as affiliations with the Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta, the Lexington Philharmonic and the Blue Grass Charity Foundation, LLC. Additionally, Ms. Bowers has held honorary roles, such as chair for House Majority Trust within the commonwealth of Kentucky.

Among her major accomplishments, Ms. Bowers was recognized for Healthcare and Medical Malpractice Law for Defendants by Best Lawyers, achieved an AV Preeminent Rating with MH Sub I, LLC dba Internet Brands, received a Top-Rated Medical Malpractice Lawyer distinction from Super Lawyers, and, among other accolades, was named Defense Lawyer of the Year by the Kentucky Defense Counsel. She attributes her success to diligence and hard work along with an understanding that professional obligations must take precedence over personal pursuits when necessary. This philosophy has shaped both Ms. Bowers’ career trajectory and reputation among peers.

Looking ahead professionally, Ms. Bowers aims to continue assisting hospitals and healthcare entities along with their employees through complex litigation processes while striving for strong outcomes on their behalf. She hopes to be remembered as someone who embodies dedication, quality and hard work, a legacy reflected throughout her distinguished career spanning more than 40 years in law.
