Mr. Lackey has been a seasoned attorney representing Deatherage, Myers & Lackey PLLC in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, for over 30 years. He joined the prestigious firm in 1993 and became a partner in 1998. He focuses his practice on employment, education, municipal and municipal utilities, real property and labor law, wills and trusts, among other areas of the law.
In his role, Mr. Lackey serves as the general counsel for two local school districts and represents public schools, public school employees and other public school districts in legal matters regarding employment cases, civil rights cases and federal investigations. He also represents numerous utility companies, including the largest internet service providers in nine counties statewide. Furthermore, Mr. Lackey provides legal representation for the Crisp County Water District and has continued representing the City of Pembroke for over 30 years. Having joined his firm immediately after passing the bar, Mr. Lackey has been an instrumental figure who has excelled in leading the business and mentoring younger attorneys.
In preparation for his legal career, Mr. Lackey received a Bachelor of Arts in economics and finance, magna cum laude, from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1990 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1993. He was admitted to practice by the Kentucky Bar Association, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Besides his commitments at Deatherage, Myers & Lackey PLLC, Mr. Lackey has been highly engaged in professional organizations related to law. He is a member of the Kentucky Bar Association’s ethics committee and serves as the organization’s ethics hotline attorney. As a member of the ethics committee, he engages with about 20 attorneys statewide, focusing on the professional responsibilities of practicing lawyers and providing ethics opinions for the legal profession. Among other membership involvement, Mr. Lackey is active in the American Bar Association and the National Association of School Board Attorneys and is a member attorney of the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel. He is also a former trustee for the Kentucky Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts Fund board of trustees, a past president of the Christian County Bar Association, and a past president and board of directors for the Kentucky Council of School Board Attorneys.
Civically engaged, Mr. Lackey is affiliated with the Kentucky Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Kentucky Bar Association, where he has supported access to justice as a member of its board of directors since 2022. The foundation raises and grants funds to support various philanthropic causes, including domestic violence shelters and educational programs. Mr. Lackey is also active at his parish, Saint John United Methodist Church, as a member of the church council and as a Sunday school teacher. He has also been a member of the board of directors at The Sanctuary Inc.
Among his many career accomplishments, Mr. Lackey was instrumental in representing the Hopkinsville Electric System, a local internet service provider, for many years. In 2017, he was tasked with legally expanding the municipal utility to become the largest broadband provider in Western Kentucky. The negotiation took several months.
Grateful for his success, Mr. Lackey was the first in his family to graduate college and the first to become a lawyer. As he looks forward to the future, he aims to continue making a difference in the community and positively impacting the legal system.
