Lawrence D. Lissauer, Partner at Finkelstein & Partners LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Personal Injury Law.
Mr. Lissauer has established a distinguished legal career marked by expertise in plaintiff personal injury litigation, appellate law and motions. For three decades, he has served as a partner in the motions and appeals division at Finkelstein & Partners LLP in Orange County, New York, where his responsibilities include writing motions and appeals, arguing appeals, attending court conferences, conducting depositions as needed, and preparing memoranda of law for both state and federal courts. Additionally, Mr. Lissauer serves as the firm’s liaison for the State E-filing protocol.
A tenure at Finkelstein & Partners LLP that has been highlighted by several achievements, Mr. Lissauer has won approximately 35 appeals in both state and federal courts. Notably, he has argued before every appellate court in New York, including the U.S. Court of Appeals, and presented cases in the Southern, Eastern, Northern and Western Districts of New York, losing his only appeal in the New York State Court of Appeals. Mr. Lissauer’s record demonstrates a high level of proficiency and commitment to appellate advocacy.
Before joining Finkelstein & Partners, LLP in 1996, Mr. Lissauer was a partner at Frederick J. Murphy & Associates from 1989 to 1996. In this capacity, he developed his litigation skills and deepened his understanding of personal injury law. Mr. Lissauer’s earlier experience as an associate lawyer at Grogan & Souto P.C. between 1985 and 1989 provided him with foundational experience in legal research, writing and courtroom procedure.
In addition to his primary legal practice, Mr. Lissauer has contributed significantly to legal education. Since 2008, he has served as a continuing legal education instructor for the Orange County Bar Association and through his firm, focusing on mentoring young lawyers and enhancing their professional development. Mr. Lissauer also participates in the Fifth Thursday Program, which connects young attorneys with judges to foster professionalism and provide insight into judicial expectations.
Mr. Lissauer previously held the position of associate professor of business at Orange County Community College from 1993 to 2014. He taught courses in business law and paralegal development, sharing his knowledge with students pursuing careers in the field.
In preparation for his future, Mr. Lissauer acquired a Bachelor of Arts in political science and economics from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, in 1982 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Albany Law School in Albany, New York, in 1985. He was admitted to practice by the New York Bar Association in 1986 and has maintained certification as a continuing legal education instructor since 2008.
Mr. Lissauer’s professional affiliations reflect a commitment to advancing the legal profession. He is the president of the Orange County Bar Association, where he has been a board member since 2015. He also serves as a delegate for the Ninth Judicial District within the New York State Bar Association. Additionally, Mr. Lissauer is a member of the American Bar Association and the New York State Trial Lawyers Association.
Civic engagement is central to Mr. Lissauer’s professional identity. As chair of the ethics board for the Town of New Windsor since 2018, he works to uphold ethical standards within local government. His dedication to improving the profession’s image is evident through volunteer work, such as coaching the mock trial team at Minisink Valley High School, a team that reached the state finals under his guidance.
Mr. Lissauer’s achievements have been recognized with inclusion in Super Lawyers in 2019, 2020 and 2021. He attributes his success to an open-minded approach shaped by early work for insurance companies, an experience that provided a valuable perspective when representing plaintiffs. Mr. Lissauer also notes the inspiration of his father, an attorney, as well as several professors during college, and the mentorship he received as a young lawyer for igniting his passion for law and playing a pivotal role in his development.
Looking ahead, Mr. Lissauer intends to continue advocating for clients while mentoring emerging lawyers both within his firm and across the country. He approaches every client as unique and strives to build a foundation that will better serve future clients while contributing positively to the broader community through precedent-setting legal work.
