With over a decade and a half of experience, Mr. Chigbu has built a successful career in finance, specializing in international corporate tax law, excelling as managing partner of Chigbu & Co LLP since 2006. The boutique international business and tax law firm is focused on cross-border transactions, providing innovative strategies to reduce tax burdens and improve financial outcomes, offering personalized legal services. In his role, he serves as a contract tax director for client tax departments, providing tax planning and implementation advice, conducting tax provision reviews, and managing external advisers, as well as ensuring timely tax filings, representing clients in audits before domestic and international tax authorities, addressing contingent reserve issues and disclosures under FIN 48, and implementing best-practice, SOX-compliant processes. Additionally, he and his wife founded of the Mercy Gambo-Chigbu Memorial Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting women, children, and students in underserved communities. The foundation has provided essential aid to flood victims in Ghana, including rice, cooking oil, and sanitary pads, and has established a $10,000 scholarship for Ghanaian medical students.
Mr. Chigbu’s experience also includes roles as tax adviser for PMC-Sierra from 2008 to 2011, contract tax director at SGI from 2006 to 2008, vice president and general tax counsel at Business Objects from 2000 to 2006, vice president of global tax at Sanmina Corporation from 2005 to 2006, tax counsel for Chevron Corporation from 1996 to 2000, and supervising senior tax consultant at KPMG from 1994 to 1996. Laying a solid educational foundation, he completed coursework in economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1986, earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics and political science from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1989, a Master of Laws in tax from New York University School of Law in 1994, and a Juris Doctor from LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1993. He was also admitted to the California Bar Association and is a member of the California Tax Association.
Reflecting on his path, Mr. Chigbu takes great pride in his achievement at Chevron, where he helped secure $300 million in tax deductions in 1998, accomplishing this remarkable feat within a single year and contributing to a successful court case. He is also deeply fulfilled by his role in establishing the Mercy Gambo-Chigbu Memorial Foundation, which allows him to give back to his home country. In light of his impressive undertakings, he has received the Supplier Award from Ghana Medical Doctors in 2022, the Chairman’s Award from Chevron Corporation, and the CFO Award. He attributes his success to his father, who instilled in him a lifelong love of reading and learning from an early age. Additionally, he credits his straightforward approach, emphasizing that he “says it like it is and does as he says.” In his opinion, success also means pursuing his professional passions while enjoying life. Looking to the future, he aims to bring high-quality medical services to developing countries, matching the standards available in the US.
