James E. Conway, Arbitrator at Arbitration & Mediation Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in arbitration and mediation.
With decades of experience to his credit, Mr. Conway has excelled as an arbitrator with Arbitration & Mediation Services since 1996. Prior to this position, he was active as partner and of counsel with the law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP from 1985 to 1986 as well as from 1991 to 1996. He previously found success as the vice president of labor relations with National Airlines between 1976 and 1980. Mr. Conway began his career with Northwest Airlines, having been appointed as the director of labor relations between 1967 and 1976.
To support his professional ambitions, Mr. Conway initially pursued an education at Saint John’s University, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1963. He subsequently continued his studies with a Doctor of Jurisprudence at the William Mitchell College of Law in 1967. Following these achievements, Mr. Conway concluded his formal academic efforts at Georgetown University Law Center in 1982, graduating with a Master of Laws in labor law in 1982.
Beyond his primary responsibilities in his field, Mr. Conway has been involved with multiple endeavors outside of his immediate circles. He has notably contributed to the American Bar Association as a panel member and a member of the steering committee. He was likewise recruited to the panel for the National Mediation Board and the Board of Trustees for the College of St. Benedict. The former president of the Airline Industrial Relations Association, Mr. Conway has been additionally affiliated with the Minnesota State Bar Association and the American Arbitration Association.
Mr. Conway was drawn to his present specialty after a number of years as a labor relations attorney, during which time he had the opportunity to represent employers in the airline and sports industries, including the National Football League, in their arbitration cases. During this time, he became esteemed among his peers and clients for his passion in his advocacy, striving to achieve the best results possible for his clients while maintaining a respectful environment for all arbitrators involved. Mr. Conway eventually returned to his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota, to expand upon his arbitration work, handling clients in the railroad industry as well.
Among his most notable achievements, Mr. Conway fondly recalls his tenure as the president of the Airline Industrial Relations Association, a role in which he led negotiations with the nation’s primary railroad carriers. He is also incredibly proud of his work as the editor-in-chief of newspapers throughout his educational ventures, from high school to college to law school. Mr. Conway is also grateful to have made an impact in the airline industry, including his time with National Airlines and Pan American.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Conway hopes to conclude his career on his terms, as he focuses on his final case with the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington, D.C. In his impending retirement, he hopes to shift his attention toward his hobbies, which include painting, reading, and running. In appreciation of his accomplishments, Mr. Conway hopes to cement his legacy as someone who made a mark on his industry and community alike.
