Joseph May

Title: Lawyer
Company: Private Practice
Location: Nashville, Tennessee, United States

Joseph May, Director at Private Practice Law, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of law.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University in 1951, a young Mr. May applied to Harvard Law School but when the Korean War began around the time he was supposed to attend, he instead chose to serve his nation and enlisted in the United States military. Upon returning to the United States after serving in the US Navy and US Army, Mr. May worked as the president of Nuweave Socks, Inc., from 1955 to 1959. He earned a Juris Doctor from New York University in 1958 and was admitted to practice law in Tennessee a year later. Prior to entering the field of law, Mr. May continued the long-standing tradition of working in the family business, May Hosiery Mills, in Nashville. Like his father and grandfather before him, Mr. May championed the business before eventually selling the company in 1983 so he could dedicate himself fully to practicing law.

Mr. May has served as the director of his private practice in Nashville since 1984 and has undertaken responsibilities separate from his main pursuit. He has served on many charitable boards and has been the director of Merrill Lynch Asset Management from 1897 to 2002, a member of the advisory board for Asian Strategies Group in 1994 and in 2003, he helped establish a bank that is now called The Truxton Trust. He holds a membership with the Tennessee Bar Association, the Nashville Bar Association, the Panel of Neutrals, the American Arbitration Association and Eagle Scout Association, among other organizations, and has previously served as president of the Tennessee Historical Society and the Nashville chapter of the Rotary Club. In addition to these endeavors, Mr. May enjoys writing and has published works such as “Vestigial Organ,” “The Rest,” “An Alphabet of Letters,” “A Confetti of Papers” and “Walking Around the House.” As a testament to his success, Mr. May has been featured in Who’s Who In Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest and Who’s Who in the World.
