As a partner of Morrison & Foerster, Dr. Mullen offers relevant scientific experience for clients involved in intellectual property proceedings. He is the founder of the firm’s antibody patent group and the lead of the San Diego office patent group, and leads a significant practice in patent counseling, patent prosecution, IP due diligence, and venture intellectual property. Primarily a patent prosecutor, Dr. Mullen also offers expertise on acquisitions, infringement issues, and post-issuance proceedings, especially for the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and life science industries.
Dr. Mullen was always interested in helping others, initially studying with the University of California, San Diego, and earning a PhD with the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He pioneered the development of monoclonal antibodies as a laboratory researcher at Hybritech Inc., and worked with the Research Institute of Scripps Clinic. In 1997, Dr. Mullen earned a JD from the Hastings College of Law at the University of California, and delved into assisting clients with the law in the context of biotechnology, including sophisticated medical therapies and research.
Dr. Mullen is admitted to practice in the state of California and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He was selected for the 2018 edition of Best Lawyers in the area of patent law, and is listed with the 2017 Top 500 of the San Diego Business Journal. Dr. Mullen was named 2016 Life Sciences Star by LMG Life Sciences, and was named one of the most outstanding lawyers in San Diego by San Diego Business Journal’s Best of the Bar list. However, his favorite honor may be father of the year for his children Isabella Zenovia, Olivia Rasha, and Samantha Maria.
