Thomas J. Byrne, managing partner at Byrne, Kiely & White LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in law.
Who better than a trained commercial pilot to serve as an aviation lawyer? Mr. Byrne not only has expertise in aviation, insurance, products liability and environmental law, he flew with the U.S. Air Force and the Air National Guard as a pilot from 1967 to 1979. He has served the law firm of Byrne, Kiely and White and its predecessor since 1986, and holds 41 years of experience representing clients from Denver, Colorado. In fact, Mr. Byrne has practiced law in Colorado since attending the University of Denver, where he earned a J.D. in 1976.
Born in Rochester, New York, Mr. Byrne joined the U.S. Air Force immediately after graduating from the University of Rochester with an AB in 1967. He served to the rank of captain and entered law school already certified to fly with instrument and mulit-engine aircraft. Naturally, he gravitated toward aspects of the law related to flight, though his legal focus was years in the making. First, Mr. Byrne served as a law clerk with the District Court of Colorado in Denver, and went on to become an associate with Ullstrom Law Offices in the city. In 1983, he joined Conklin and Adler Ltd as a partner and Denver area manager. It was in 1986 that Mr. Byrne became managing partner of Byrne, Knudsen and White LLP, which would later become Byrne, Kiely and White LLC, focusing on business, commercial, environmental, and general civil practice concerning aviation.
Ultimately, Mr. Byrne was admitted to practice in various state and federal court systems in Colorado, California, Texas, New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Montana. Though he touched down at each state for legal practice, Mr. Byrne gave back to his adopted home, and served as a member of the financial committee for the Citizens for Romer in Denver from 1990 to 1998. He is a member of the American Bar Association in various relevant sections, notably serving as vice chair of the aviation and space law committee. In addition, Mr. Byrne has supported the International Bar Association, the Colorado Bar Association, the Denver Bar Association, the State Bars of California and New York, the Defense Research Institute, the Colorado Defense Lawyers Association, the National Business Aircraft Association, the Lawyer-Pilot Bar Association, the Aviation Insurance Association, the National Air Transportation Association, and the Flight Safety Foundation. He keeps a home base in Colorado for his wife, Brenda C. Byrne, and his children Thomas, David, Heather, and Alexandra.
