Everett W. Jenkins, Jr., noted lawyer, author and historian has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in legal, scholarly, and community services.
With over 40 years of professional legal experience, Mr. Jenkins served as the senior assistant city attorney for the City of Richmond, California, from 2005 to 2021 after serving as interim city attorney from 2004 to 2005; assistant city attorney from 1984 to 2004; and deputy city attorney from 1981 to 1984. Mr. Jenkins also served as the authority attorney for the West Contra Costa Transportation Advisory Committee from 1988 to 2005. From 1987 to 1988, he was a public member on the Contra Costa County Solid Waste Commission, having been a legal representative for the technical advisory committee from 1986 to 1987. He served as the advising attorney for the West Contra Costa Solid Waste Management Authority from 1985 to 1987 and was the board attorney for the West County Agency from 1981 to 1990. Mr. Jenkins began his legal career as a deputy county counsel with the Contra Costa County Counsel’s Office in 1980 and served with County until 1981.
Mr. Jenkins began his formal career as a scholar as a student at Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1975. He continued his studies at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1978. In addition to his legal work, Mr. Jenkins became a celebrated author and respected voice in Islamic and African history. He is the author of the first three volumes of Pan-African Chronology, the first two volumes of The Muslim Diaspora, and The Creation. He is also the author of The Muslim Compendium and The 100 Greatest Muslims.
Mr. Jenkins was active in community organizations. He served on the board of directors of the West Contra Costa YMCA from 1987 to 2021. He served as chairperson of the West Contra Costa YMCA board of directors from 1996 to 1998. Mr. Jenkins also served on the board of directors of the YMCA of the East Bay from 1996 to 2013. He also served as a youth sports baseball and softball umpire from 1997 to 2014. For his contributions to his community, Mr. Jenkins was named the Rita Davis Volunteer of the Year in 1993 and the Fred Breen Humanitarian of the Year in 2010 by the West Contra Costa YMCA. He also received the President’s Volunteer Service Award from the YMCA of the East Bay in 2013.
For his legal and community services, and for his scholarly achievements, Mr. Jenkins was selected for inclusion in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in the World.
Mr. Jenkins is the son of Everett Wilbur Jenkins and Lillie Bell (Ingram) Jenkins. He married Monica Lynn Endsley on June 3, 1978. They divorced on August 13, 2003. They have four children: Ryan, Camille, Jennifer, and Cristina.
