Headquartered in Chattanooga, ICS provides a full scope of legal and consulting services for elementary and secondary schools, as well as higher education institutions, specializing in Title IX compliance of the Education Amendments of 1972 and the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization amendments to the Jeanne Clery Act.
Before being named the chief innovation officer and director, Ms. Smith was named the director of Title IX services at ICS starting in 2019. Her expertise in Title IX regulations has been instrumental in shaping policies that protect students from discrimination and harassment. From 2014 to 2019, Ms. Smith was the director of student conduct and community standards and deputy Title IX coordinator at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Ms. Smith’s legal career began at the Blount County District Attorney’s Office in Maryville, Tennessee, where she served as an assistant district attorney in 2009. During her tenure, she honed her skills in litigation and developed a deep understanding of the legal system, which laid the foundation for her subsequent roles in higher education compliance.
In preparation for her future, Ms. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government in 2006 from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 2009 from the College of Law at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She attributes much of her success to her experience as a collegiate athlete, which instilled in her the dedication, commitment and drive necessary to excel professionally. This athletic background also contributes to Ms. Smith’s infectious energy and enthusiasm for her work.
Ms. Smith is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association, the Knoxville Bar Association and the Tennessee School Board Attorneys Association.
