Ms. Hayes is a distinguished patent attorney with more than 30 years of experience in the legal profession, specializing in pharmaceutical and chemical patents. As a principal at Jordan IP Law, LLC since 2019, she is responsible for managing a comprehensive portfolio of patent cases. In this role, she is responsible for creating new patent applications, consulting with clients, and responding to communications from various patent offices worldwide. Her wealth of expertise in pharmaceutical and chemical patent prosecution and opinion writing has earned her recognition as a leading figure in her field.
Prior to her present position, Ms. Hayes excelled as a partner at Sughrue Mion PLLC from 2009 to 2019, where she honed her skills in patent law. She previously served as a petitions attorney and patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office between 1997 and 2001 and an associate at Sughrue Mion PLLC between 2001 and 2008. Ms. Hayes has been additionally active as a member of several organizations, including the National Bar Association, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and the American Chemical Society. These affiliations reflect her commitment to remaining up-to-date with recent developments in her field and contributing to the broader legal and scientific communities.
Inspired by her mother, who is a lawyer, and her father, who is a pharmacist, Ms. Hayes initially pursued an education at Howard University, from which she earned a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy in 1991. She continued her formal academic efforts with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Howard University School of Law in 1994. She eventually returned to her studies at The George Washington University Law School, obtaining a Master of Laws in intellectual property law in 2002. Ms. Hayes ultimately graduated with a Master of Science in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Florida in 2021.
In addition to her professional achievements, Ms. Hayes co-founded a nonprofit organization in 2023 with her three children to honor the memory of her late husband. The organization provides scholarships to children who have lost their parents, awarding $10,000 to four students during its inaugural year and $13,000 to thirteen students in 2024. Her dedication to philanthropy is also recognized through accolades such as the Saginaw STEM Scholarship from the Golden Women Foundation.
Outside of her primary responsibilities, Ms. Hayes is deeply committed to giving back to the community and helping others succeed academically and professionally. Born in Toledo, she remains incredibly dedicated to her family, whose unwavering support remains the cornerstone of her success. In the coming years, she plans to pursue a doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences while expanding the reach of her nonprofit organization to support students facing various challenges and advocating for diversity within the field. Likewise, she envisions herself eventually retiring happily while traveling the world and embracing new experiences in her spare time. In the near future, Ms. Hayes also hopes to cement a legacy rooted in uplifting those in need and making meaningful change in the lives of others through both her professional work and philanthropic efforts.
