She has been an attorney at law at Pooja Chawla P.C. since 2009, where she oversees marketing, client representation, networking, billing, and communication. Previously, she served as a judicial assistant to the Honorable Eugene R. Verin in the Jefferson County Circuit Court, Bessemer Division, from 2013 to 2014, and as an assistant to the vice president at Tractebel Engineers & Constructors Pvt. Ltd in 2001. Throughout her career, she has also engaged in various speaking engagements at academic and government institutions.
Ms. Chawla is a member of Super Lawyers, the Kiwanis Club, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, the National Legal Mentoring Consortium, the Birmingham Bar Association, the Bessemer Bar Association, and the Shore Vance Inns of Court. She has also served as a former co-chair of the Alabama State Bar, contributed her time to Legal Services Alabama, and served as a board member of the Birmingham Bar Foundation. Her previous roles include executive committee member of the Birmingham Bar Association and president of the board of trustees for the Legal Aid Society of Birmingham, where she served for six years. Additionally, she has participated in the Leadership Birmingham Class of 2020, the Alabama Leadership Initiative Class of 2018, the Alabama State Bar Leadership Forum Class of 2017, and the Future Leaders Forum Class of 2015.
In recognition of her impressive achievements, Ms. Chawla has been named among the Top Women Attorneys by B-Metro Magazine from 2018 to 2024 and was listed as one of the Top Family Law Attorneys by B-Metro Magazine in 2022. She received the Outstanding Leadership award from the South Asian Birmingham Society in 2022, was named among the Top Birmingham Attorneys by Birmingham Magazine in 2020, was recognized as a Top Flight Attorney by B-Metro Magazine in 2019, and was included on the Rising Star List in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
Ms. Chawla laid a solid foundation for her career by earning a diploma in French Language from J. N. Academy of Languages in 1997, a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from the University of Delhi in 1998, a post-graduate diploma in public relations from R. P. Institute of Communication & Management in 1999, and a Juris Doctor from Birmingham School of Law in 2009. Additionally, she holds certifications as a mediator in Termination of Parental Rights from the Alabama State Bar, a mediator in Civil Litigation and Domestic Relations, and a certified Guardian ad Litem through the Alabama Office of Courts.
In the coming years, Ms. Chawla aims to focus more on appellate work while continuing her deep involvement in pro bono efforts both statewide and locally. During her time with the Alabama State Bar Association, she worked to expand pro bono services. Recently, she began a contract with Legal Aid Services of Alabama, which allows her to provide legal services and gradually return to her pro bono work. She remains committed to assisting individuals who cannot afford legal fees and is actively working to re-engage in this vital area.
