With a decade and a half of experience in legal services, Ms. Chawla has built a successful career specializing in family, criminal defense and appellate law. Ms. Chawla, a University of Delhi alumna, immigrated to the Unites States in 2001. She is proficient in Hindi, Punjabi and English. While raising two young children, she earned her Juris Doctor from Birmingham School of Law and was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 2009. During her clerkship with the Honorable Eugene R. Verin at the Jefferson County Circuit Court, Ms. Chawla refined her legal expertise in civil cases and jury trials. Throughout her career, she has also engaged in various speaking engagements at Statewide legal and women empowerment events. Her dedication to professional ethics and exemplary decision-making skills have also enabled her to serve as special district judge in Jefferson County.
Ms. Chawla is a member of National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, National Legal Mentoring Consortium, American Bar Association, Alabama State Bar Association, Birmingham Bar Association, and the American Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. She serves as a board member to the Birmingham Bar Foundation, chairs the Mentoring Committee with the Birmingham Bar Association, and serves as a sounding board member at various Sections and Committees within the Birmingham Bar Association and Alabama State Bar Association. Ms. Chawla, a former president of the Legal Aid Society of Birmingham, continues to serve as their sounding board member. She also co-chaired the Pro Bono Committee of the Alabama State Bar and served as executive vice-president of the board of directors for FBI Citizen’s Academy Alumni Association, Birmingham Chapter.
Ms. Chawla is a graduate of various local and Statewide Leadership programs to include Future Leaders Forum, Alabama State Bar Leadership Forum, Alabama Leadership Initiative, Leadership Birmingham and Leadership Hoover. Her active participation and support to various organizations demonstrates her desire to contribute to broader goals showcasing her leadership skills.
In recognition of her impressive achievements, Ms. Chawla has been recognized as a Rising Star by Mid-South Super Lawyers, Top Women Attorneys by B-Metro Magazine from 2018 to 2024, Top Flight Attorney by B-Metro Magazine in 2019, Top Family Law Attorneys by B-Metro Magazine in 2022, and Top Birmingham Attorneys by Birmingham Magazine in 2020. She was recently featured as one of the Top Women Business Leaders in Birmingham, Alabama by B-Metro magazine. Ms. Chawla’s commitment to her local community achieved her Outstanding Leadership Award from the South Asian Birmingham Society in 2022. Further, she is a Marquis Who’s Who Honored Listee in 2024.
Ms. Chawla established a strong foundation for her career in India, by obtaining a diploma in French language from J. N. Academy of Languages in 1997, a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from the University of Delhi in 1998, and a post-graduate diploma in public relations from R. P. Institute of Communication & Management in 1999. She continued her education after immigrating to the United States and earned her Juris Doctor degree from Birmingham School of Law in 2009. Ms. Chawla is a certified Mediator in Civil Litigation, Domestic Relations and Termination of Parental Rights, and is equipped with negotiation skills for conflict resolution. She is also certified Guardian ad Litem through the Alabama Office of Courts and serves the best interest of the children in the State of Alabama.
In the upcoming years, Ms. Chawla plans to focus more on appellate work while maintaining her strong commitment to pro bono efforts both statewide and locally. During her tenure with the Pro Bono Committee of the Alabama State Bar Association, she strived to expand pro bono services in the State of Alabama. Through her engagement with the Legal Aid Services of Alabama, she delivers legal assistance to low-income families at no cost to them and is gradually resuming her pro bono activities. She remains dedicated to helping individuals who cannot afford legal fees and is actively working to re-engage in this critical area.
