With nearly four decades of experience, Mr. Kelly has established a distinguished career in legal services, specializing in civil litigation, transactional work, contracts, and employment law. He is currently the owner and an attorney at The Kelly Law Firm LLC, a position he has held since 1996. Prior to this, he was a partner at Warren, Mundt & Martin from 1993 to 1995, an associate at Warren, Mundt, Martin & O’Dowd from 1987 to 1993, and an associate at LaFrance & Associate from 1986 to 1987. He has also served as secretary of the local chapter of the Southwest Colorado Bar Association from 1997 to 1999 and co-chair of the Employment Law Committee of the El Paso County Bar Association from 1992 to 1994. He is affiliated with the Colorado Bar Association, Pi Gamma Mu Honor Society, and the 1209 Society. In addition to his legal work, he is civically engaged, donating items to the humane society driven by his love for dogs and commitment to supporting animal welfare initiatives.
Laying a solid educational foundation, Mr. Kelly earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics, graduating magna cum laude from Colorado College in 1982. He pursued coursework in international law at Magdalen College, University of Oxford in 1985 and completed a Juris Doctor at the University of Colorado Boulder the same year. He also obtained a certification from the University of San Diego Institute at the University of Oxford in 1985. His bar admissions include the Colorado Bar Association, the United States District Court for the District of Colorado, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. In 2004, he pursued coursework in constitutional history studies at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. Reflecting on his career, his significant milestones include winning one of the largest verdicts in the state in a wrongful discharge lawsuit, Walker v. GTE, in 1996. He has also litigated cases that have gained international attention, having successfully tried a case that established a new law under Colorado’s wrongful death statutes via Dewey v. Hardy. In light of his impressive undertakings, he was named to the Outstanding Young Men of America from 1987 to 1996.
In the coming years, Mr. Kelly is working toward retirement. In the meantime, he aims to continue enjoying his solo practice in the scenic mountains of southwest Colorado. When advising future professionals, he emphasizes that they should prioritize breaks to de-stress. He firmly believes in the restorative power of downtime and spending time in the natural world. In his personal time, he enjoys taekwondo, yoga, running, skiing, playing chess, exercising, and biking.
