Location: Raynham, Massachusetts, United States
David A. Chaves, Attorney At Law at Chaves Legal, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in estate planning law.
With more than 40 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Chaves has found much success in the fields of law enforcement, legal practice, and community service. Since 2017, he has excelled as an attorney-at-law with Chaves Legal in Plymouth, Massachusetts. In this position, Mr. Chaves specializes in estate planning, with a focus on helping families preserve their legacies and protect their assets for future generations.
Born and raised in Massachusetts, Mr. Chaves embarked on his professional path in 1984, beginning his career with the Raynham Police Department. His dedication and exceptional skills quickly enabled him to advance to the rank of detective sergeant, making him one of the youngest to achieve such a position in the state. Mr. Chaves’ unparalleled ambition and drive led him to pursue higher education during this time, initially earning a Bachelor of Science in the administration of justice from Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island in 1990.
Despite the arduous demands of his job, Mr. Chaves attended law school at night and graduated with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, in 1995. In that same year, he passed the bar examination in Massachusetts and has remained affiliated with the Massachusetts Bar Association for nearly 30 years since. Notably, Mr. Chaves has been distinguished as the first police officer under civil service in Massachusetts to also become an attorney.
However, Mr. Chaves was still dedicated to serving the public as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), advancing to the role of a supervisory special agent between 1997 and 2017. His tenure at the FBI was marked by numerous achievements, including being recognized as one of the aforementioned agency’s top speakers. Mr. Chaves’ expertise in investigative techniques and his commitment to the rule of law acquired him a reputation as a respected leader within the FBI.
Mr. Chaves’ impact extended beyond the borders of the United States as well, as he played a pivotal role in promoting the rule of law in the Middle East, accompanying U.S. delegations of federal judges and prosecutors to countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Qatar, and Iraq. During these trips, he exhibited FBI investigative techniques and discussed fundamental human rights issues, which helped to foster international cooperation and understanding. A memorable experience during Mr. Chaves’ time in Iraq was bonding with local judges over a shared cigarette break, despite not being a smoker himself, as their camaraderie and friendship were symbolized by the gift of a hookah.
One of the most poignant moments of Mr. Chaves’ career was his action as a first responder during the September 11th attacks in 2001, reflecting his dedication and courage during times of national crisis. Outside of his primary responsibilities, his written work includes contributing to “The Essential Guide to Estate Planning for Police, Firefighters, and EMS,” further bolstering his commitment to serving those who dedicate their lives to public safety.
In 2021, Mr. Chaves became an ordained minister through the Universal Life Church. This new designation aligns with his goal of making estate planning affordable and accessible, particularly for veterans and first responders. Likewise, he has been motivated greatly by the guiding principles of his religion as well as the teachings of Billy Graham and Charles Stanley. In the coming years, Mr. Chaves hopes to establish his own church, where he can provide spiritual guidance and support to his community so others may live their lives to the fullest.
