Erica H. Young, Esq., Assistant Public Defender at the Knox County Public Defender’s Office, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in legal representation.
Ms. Young is an accomplished legal professional with more than 20 years of experience to her credit. Since 2022, she has shared her legal acumen as an assistant public defender with the Knox County Public Defender’s Office, before which she was a supervising attorney for prison legal services with the Office of the Ohio Public Defender from 2018 to 2022. From 2017 to 2018, Ms. Young was a case manager with the YMCA of Central Ohio, and from 2015 to 2018, she was the owner and attorney of her own firm, Erica H. Young, Attorney at Law.
During her accomplished career, Ms. Young garnered experience as an associate attorney with The Law Office of Brian Jones LLC in 2015 and as an attorney with Portman & Foley LLP from 2013 to 2015. From 2012 to 2013, she was a law clerk and associate-in-waiting with Portman & Foley LLP, and from 2011 to 2012, she was a law clerk with W. Joseph Edwards, Attorney at Law. Ms. Young began her professional pursuits in 2000 as an office and account manager with Stavroff Venture Corp and began her legal career in 2007 as a clerk and legal assistant for Portman, Foley & Flint LLP, where she remained until 2011.
Ms. Young pursued her higher education at The Ohio State University, graduating in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in comparative ethnic and American studies. From 2011 to 2012, she was a legal intern with the Office of the Ohio Public Defender’s Wrongful Conviction Project, after which she matriculated at the Capital University Law School. In 2012, Ms. Young obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the aforementioned institution before graduating from The Ohio State University with a Master of Social Work in 2018. In 2013, she was admitted to practice law in the state of Ohio.
In recognition of her accomplishments, Ms. Young was named to Lawyers of Distinction in 2023. She keeps abreast of developments in her career by maintaining membership with numerous professional organizations, including the Ohio State Bar Foundation, the National Association of Professional Women, the Women Lawyers of Franklin County, the Ohio Association for Justice and the Ohio State Bar Association. Ms. Young attributes her success to her mentors, Frederic A. Portmann and Joseph Medici, and in the future, she hopes to continue her success in criminal litigation. In her spare time, she enjoys rescuing and spending time with senior dogs.
