Ms. Mitchell founded her boutique law firm in Austin, Texas in 2004 and has prospered as a transactional entertainment lawyer with a focus on music, television, and film issues. She maintains a diverse creative clientele of both established and emerging talent (songwriters, authors, artists) as well as numerous record producers, filmmakers, and independent production companies. She primarily drafts, reviews, and negotiates entertainment industry contracts and provides advice and counsel pertaining to the legal and business aspects of the music and film industries. In this position, Ms. Mitchell has operated as legal counsel for dozens of independent narrative films and documentaries and has served as outside music counsel for the PBS music television program “Austin City Limits for more than a decade.

After earning her Bachelor of Arts in 1999 in Economics and Spanish with a minor in French from the University of Texas at Austin, Ms. Mitchell served as the Office Manager of the Texas Music Office (TMO) from 2000 to 2001, where she researched, developed, and edited the first print edition of Texas Talent Register and gained valuable insight into the Texas music industry. Determined to become a music lawyer, she left the TMO to attend the highly-regarded University of Texas School of Law in Fall 2001. She then supplemented her legal education by taking coursework in international law and media studies in 2003 at University College London before returning to Austin and completing her Doctor of Jurisprudence in 2004 from UT Law.

In addition to her legal work, Ms. Mitchell is incredibly active in professional entertainment law organizations, having served as chair and/or council member of the Texas Entertainment and Sports Law Section for more than a decade as well as founding the Entertainment and Sports Law Section of the Austin Bar Association, which she chaired for four years. She is also Course Director for the annual Entertainment Law 101 program and Co-Director of the Entertainment Law Institute. Staying true to her musician roots, she has also continued to perform as a vocalist, keyboardist, and ukulele player in several Austin ensembles. This is on top of her biggest job of all – mom of three.

Ms. Mitchell is a sought-after speaker on music and film law issues having given presentations for the American Bar Association, the Austin Film Society, the Austin Music Foundation, the Copyright Society of the USA, Texas Accountants & Lawyers for the Arts, St. Mary’s School of Law, the University of Texas at Austin, and the SXSW Film & Music Conferences, to name only a few. She has thrived with her published works as well, having authored articles for the Entertainment & Sports Lawyer, Austin Lawyer magazine, the Texas Bar Journal, and the Entertainment Law 101 program. She has also co-authored materials that were presented through the SXSW Music and Film Festivals. Ms. Mitchell has further maintained a highly visited educational website, AskaMusicLawyer.com. Ms. Mitchell plans to devote more time to writing in the coming years and will be releasing various digital products aimed at helping both aspiring entertainment lawyers and creatives on EntertainmentLawMama.com.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Mitchell has accrued several accolades throughout her career. In 2017, she was recognized among the Texas Rising Stars. Shortly thereafter, she was honored as a Texas Super Lawyer in 2020 and 2021. She was additionally selected for inclusion in Austin Monthly’s Top Attorneys List in 2021.

Ms. Mitchell attributes her success as an entertainment lawyer to persistence, networking, self-education, and a little bit of luck, which are the same skills that she encourages her creative clients to nurture. She strives to give back to her creative and entertainment lawyer communities by continuing to serve as an educator, legal mentor, and artist rights advocate. To this end, Ms. Mitchell is excited to launch EntertainmentLawMama.com in 2022, which allows her to further support aspiring entertainment lawyers and serve as a resource for creative professionals using her best “mama bear” voice and without all the legalese.
