Mr. Buff studied at Syracuse University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1966. He continued his studies at the Boston University School of Law and earned a JD in 1969. Through his legal career, he has been licensed to practice law in the states of New Jersey and Massachusetts, as well as the District of Columbia. He has additionally been admitted by the Patent Bar, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Court of Claims, and the United States Supreme Court.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Buff worked for Ally Chemical—now Honeywell—for 30 years, and worked as an attorney for the law firm Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti LLP. Since 2004, he has served as chair and managing partner of Ernest D. Buff & Associates, and since 2003, he has been a member of the President’s Advisory Council for Small Business. He attributes his success to his love and interest in his work, as well as the support and cooperation of his family.
Mr. Buff has always had a passion for reading and writing, and has been an ardent supporter of the arts. Because of his engineering background, his father-in-law suggested to him that he could combine his passions through a career in patent law, where he could write about inventions and help to advance the state of the arts. From his first day of law school, Mr. Buff knew that he had found his calling, and he has never looked back.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Mr. Buff has maintained memberships to a variety of legal organizations, including the American Bar Association, the Morris County Bar Association, the DC Bar Association, and the Patent Bar Association, among several others. He has been additionally recognized for his excellence with an Attorney of the Month Award from National Firm in 2019, a William Berry Award, and a Chicago Tribune Silver Medal Award. In the coming years, he looks to continue his work at the law firm and to reconnect with his passion for music by writing a symphony.
