Amassing nearly 50 years of professional excellence in the field of law, Mr. Finkel is a prominent lawyer and educator who has been working as of counsel at Finkel Law Firm, LLC, in Columbia, SC, since 2007, having been a founding member of the firm and its predecessor firms since 1970. Alongside this appointment, he has been a hearing officer and special referee for the South Carolina Department of Insurance since 2010, on the board of visitors of Charleston Southern University since 2001, a lecturer on insurance law at the South Carolina Bar Review since 1990, and a Capstone lecturer on law and medicine at the University of Southern Florida since 1997.

Prior to these illustrious roles, Mr. Finkel was a professor of law at Charleston School of Law from 2007 to 2015, when he ultimately reached emeritus status. In addition, he was a distinguished visiting professor at Charleston School of Law from 2005 to 2006, a lecturer of crime to court series at the South Carolina State Constables Association from 1994 to 2000, on the board of advisors of the Professional Center for Paralegal Studies from 1989 to 1998, and an adjunct professor in trial advocacy and insurance law at the University of South Carolina from 1981 to 2006. Previously, he served such entities as the Fifth Judicial Circuit as a special judge, the Columbia Junior College of Business as a lecturer and general counsel, and the South Carolina Department of Public Safety and Criminal Justice Academy as an instructor, among numerous other prominent positions.

To prepare for his career, Mr. Finkel pursued a formal education at New York University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He subsequently attended the University of South Carolina, receiving a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1970. He was admitted to practice law in the state of Carolina in 1970, as well as before the U.S. District Court of South Carolina, the Fourth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the District of Columbia between 1970 and 1973. He is a senior fellow of the Litigation Council of America.

A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals and frequent speaker in the field, Mr. Finkel has been the co-author of “Cases and Materials on South Carolina Insurance Law” since 1987, having formerly written articles for such journals as the South Carolina Trial Lawyer Bulletin, Lawyers Co-Op, South Carolina Lawyer, the University of Southern California Press, SCTLA, and the South Carolina Law Review, among others. A lifetime member of the American Law Institute since 1982, he has also maintained affiliation with several organizations related to his area of expertise, including the South Carolina Bar Association, where he has served on the fee disputes panel for the Ninth Judicial Circuit since 2009. Likewise, he was the former president of the South Carolina State Constable’s Association from 1990 to 1996, president the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association from 1982 to 1985, and chairman of the lawyer referral board of the South Carolina Bar Association from 1989 to 1994. He also remains associated with the American Bar Association, the Richland County Bar Association, the Supreme Court Historical Society, and the South Carolina Association for Justice.

As a testament to his professional success, Mr. Finkel has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Named to South Carolina Super Lawyers every year since 2008, he has also been listed in all editions of Best Lawyers in America since 1983, including in the areas of bankruptcy and credit-debtor rights law, commercial litigation and insurance law. Likewise, he has also been honored with several American Jurisprudence Awards in Regulated Industries and Evidence from the University of South Carolina, an Outstanding Alumni Certificate from Phi Alpha Delta, and an Outstanding Senior Service Certificate. Mr. Finkel has notably been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
