Michael W. Wilcox, Of Counsel at DeWitt Ross & Stevens, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in law.
Mr. Wilcox became involved in his profession because he enjoyed the complexity of it and enjoyed working with a particular kind of client. It was also helpful that his wife was very supportive and accommodating, as his job required him to be gone for long hours. He was always focused on his law practice and that was pretty much what he spent most of his time on. Mr. Wilcox began his higher education with the University of California Los Angeles, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. From there, he received a Juris Doctorate from the Marquette University Law School in 1966. Upon graduation, he was admitted to practice law in the state of Wisconsin in 1966 and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 1967.
In 1966, Mr. Wilcox began is his professional career as a law clerk to the judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, where he remained for a year. The following year he began working with Boardman, Suhr, Curry & Field as an attorney until 1983. From there, he became a partner at Quarles & Brady until 1990. He then became a partner for Stolper, Koritzinsky, Brewster & Neider for four years before becoming a partner at Stopler & Wilcox until 2000. In 2001, he took on the position of counsel and shareholder at DeWitt Ross & Stevens, where he would remain until his retirement in 2019. Mr. Wilcox also spent time as a member of the Finance Committee of the Meriter Foundation from 1983 until 2017 and has been a member of the Madison West Rotary Club since 1992.
During his career, Mr. Wilcox co-authored the three volume treatise “Marital Property Law in Wisconisn, 4th edition,” in 2010. He also co-authored the Standard Reference in his field, which he considers to be a highlight of his career.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Wilcox was inducted as a member of the American Bar Association, the Wisconsin State Bar Association and the American College Trust and Estate Counsel. He is also listed in the 1st edition of Who’s Who in Emerging Leaders and numerous editions of Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in American Law, and Who’s Who in America.
