With nearly 50 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Fannoush has excelled as a law expert with his eponymous private practice, Hamdi Fannoush, since 2012. In addition to consulting clients on various legal matters, he mentors judges, lawyers and new police officers in his present position while always emphasizing the ways the law can protect people. Prior to this role, he served as a judge with the Tripoli Court of Appeal from 2003 to 2012. During this time, Mr. Fannoush was additionally active as the director general for the Department of Public Defenders in Tripoli, Libya from 2003 to 2011 and a judge for the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights from 2006 to 2010.
Mr. Fannoush was previously appointed as the branch head for the Department of Public Defenders in Benghazi, Libya from 1997 to 2003. He had formerly worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation as a consul general from 1980 to 1983 and an ambassador from 1984 to 1997. He formally began his career as legal counsel and advisor for the Municipality of Benghazi, Libya between 1974 and 1980. Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Fannoush pursued an education at the University of Benghazi, from which he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in law in 1973.
Beyond his primary responsibilities within the field, Mr. Fannoush has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his immediate circles. Between 2003 and 2011, he contributed to the Libyan Superior Judicial Council for the Ministry of Justice. He was also elected as the president for the Department of Public Defenders in Benghazi and Tripoli between 1996 and 2011, a tenure which he cites among the highlights of his career. Notably, Mr. Fannoush was decorated with valor by the Cameroon Head of State as a testament to his stellar efforts with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Mr. Fannoush has attributed his success to the care and encouragement of his family and his wife as well as the peers who believed in him and trusted him. He has been greatly inspired by his strong belief in the law, as the law guarantees rights for the people and he firmly believes life without the law is meaningless. Looking toward the future, Mr. Fannoush hopes to refine his knowledge in Canadian and European law as to find solutions to difficult cases and help more people in need.
