A successful lawyer and educator, Mr. Dennard celebrates an enduring and prosperous career. Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, in 1966, Mr. Dennard joined the U.S. Army, serving as a Captain and company commander during the Vietnam War. While he was in the Army, he was awarded the Silver Star for valor in combat, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and two awards of the Purple Heart.
Upon the completion of his military service, Mr. Dennard returned to the U.S. to attend the University of Georgia School of Law in Athens, Georgia, where he received a Juris Doctor in 1973. Shortly after graduation, He began his law career at Ogletree Deakins and later became managing partner of its Atlanta office. He joined King & Spalding as a partner in 1991 and served on its Labor and Employment team. King & Spalding is one of the largest law firms in the country.
Prior to his retirement in 2003, Mr. Dennard represented employers in the field of labor and employment law for over 30 years, litigating the full range of cases in state and federal courts. He has argued cases in the Fourth, Sixth and Eleventh Circuits and in the United States Supreme Court. In August of 2001, Mr. Dennard was inducted as a Fellow in the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. He has been listed as one of the leading Labor and Employment lawyers in Georgia by Chambers USA.
Mr. Dennard was an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia School of Law, Mercer University Law School, and Emory University Law School. Through his work with Emory University, he served as Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Emory Law Volunteer Clinic for Veterans. From 2010 to 2020, he dedicated a substantial amount of time and resources to the pro bono representation of veterans, including assisting with service-connected disability claims before the Department of Veterans Affairs. Mr. Dennard received the Georgia Bar’s Marshall-Tuttle Award in 2011 as the Top Lawyer in the State providing pro bono services to veterans, and in 2015 received Emory Law School’s EPIC Inspiration Award for outstanding leadership in the public interest.
A prolific writer, Mr. Dennard has contributed articles to many journals, including the Georgia Bar Journal, the Mercer Law Review, and the Journal of Labor Research. Along with Patrick DiCarlo, he co-authored “Collateral Consequences of Arrests and Convictions: Policy and Law in Georgia,” published in 2009, and he collaborated with Dr. Herbert Northrup at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania on articles published in the ABA Journal, the Labor and Employment Journal, the Georgia Law Review, and the Employee Relations Law Journal.
After the publication of his article on collateral consequences, Mr. Dennard was named Volunteer of the Year by the Georgia Justice Project. He has received several other awards, including the Thomas More Award from the St. Thomas More Society in 2012 for commitment to humanity in difficult circumstances. Mr. Dennard considers his pro bono work to be “giving something back” to his profession, his community, and his country.
