Additionally active as the president and executive director for Senior Mediation and Decision-Making, Inc. between 2007 and 2015, he was also appointed as the director of mediation for the Court of Special Appeals of Maryland from 2009 to 2012. Prior to these positions, he served as counsel for Allen, Babich and Bennett from 1975 to 1978, the chief attorney for Maryland’s Legal Aid Bureau from 1979 to 1983, the executive director for the Coalition for Legal Services from 1983 to 1985, and the executive director for the Maryland Legal Services Corporation from 1986 to 2003. Dr. Rhudy likewise thrived as a research associate with the Center for World War II Studies and a professor of law in the School of Social Work at the University of Iowa.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Rhudy pursued an education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history. He continued his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in history. He concluded his studies at the University of Iowa College of Law in 1973, graduating with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Rhudy gained many valuable skills throughout his three years of service in the U.S. Army, during which time he advanced to the rank of E-5.
Beyond his primary responsibilities within the field, Dr. Rhudy has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his immediate circles. A member of the Maryland Alliance for Justice Reform and the Veterans for Peace, he was notably recruited by the Association of Conflict Resolution-Maryland as the chair for the Family, Senior, Health Care Mediation Committee from 2006 to 2011 and the founding chair for the Elder Decision-Making and Conflict Resolution Section from 2009 to 2010. He likewise contributed in administrative positions to Community Mediation Maryland, the Iowa Civil Liberties Union, the National Association of IOLTA Programs, the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations, and the Iowa Public Interest Research Group, to name a few. Dr. Rhudy has found success with his written works as well, having authored “Engaging Conflict for Fun and Profit: Current and Emerging Career Trends in Conflict Resolution” for the Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office in 2014.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Rhudy has accrued several accolades throughout his career. In 2002, he was presented with the Maryland Leadership and Law Award by the Maryland Daily Record. Soon thereafter, he was recognized with the Professional Legal Excellence Award from the Maryland Bar Foundation. He was also honored with the Arthur W. Machen, Jr. Award from the Maryland Legal Services Corporation in 2004. Looking toward the future, Dr. Rhudy hopes to continue practicing in his present position while completing his new book, “The Adventures of Bryan and Bob,” and working with a new group of experienced elder law attorneys.
