Mr. Moylan has established a distinguished career spanning more than five decades in the legal profession, marked by his expertise in securities and commodity litigation, administrative proceedings, arbitrations and mediation. Since 2003, he has served as a principal and owner of James J. Moylan and Associates PC, where he has provided comprehensive legal counsel and representation.
Leveraging her years of experience in the field, Mr. Moylan was a partner at Tressler, Soderstrom, Maloney & Priess LLP from 2000 to 2003. His earlier partnership at Arnstein & Lehr between 1995 and 2000 contributed significantly to his development as a leader in securities law. From 1981 to 1995, Mr. Moylan held dual roles as a partner at Bowen, Knepper and Moylan and at James J. Moylan and Associates Ltd., where he honed his skills in complex litigation and regulatory matters.
Mr. Moylan began his legal career as an associate with Abramson & Fox in 1977. During this period, he also served as a floor trader for live cattle futures at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange from 1980 to 1981, gaining firsthand experience in commodities markets that would inform his later legal work. Mr. Moylan was also a partner at Moylan and Early for two years, further expanding his professional repertoire.
Additionally, Mr. Moylan’s early career included serving as an assistant general counsel for the business accounting committee arbitration at the Chicago Board Options Exchange from 1975 to 1977. This role came after his foundational experience with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C., from 1972 to 1975.
Throughout his career, Mr. Moylan has demonstrated a deep commitment to education and mentorship. He taught securities regulation as an adjunct professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, from 1976 to 2002, dedicating approximately 25 years to the evening division during the fall semester. Additionally, he served as an adjunct professor of law, teaching securities litigation, at the Sturm College of Law, University of Denver, off and on between 2005 and 2020, and taught securities regulation there in 2020. Mr. Moylan also contributed to the paralegal program at Colorado Mountain College’s business school. He regards his dedication to teaching as one of his most notable achievements.
Mr. Moylan’s expertise is further evidenced by his service as an arbitrator for organizations, such as the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the Chicago Board Options Exchange Inc., the New York Stock Exchange Inc., the National Futures Association and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc. He has also acted as a mediator for FINRA-Dispute Resolution Inc. and the Routt County Small Claims Court in Colorado, and served as a hearing officer for the Illinois Securities Department and as an arbitrator for the Cook County Court Annexed Mandatory Arbitration System.
Mr. Moylan’s academic background laid a strong foundation for his career achievements. He completed a Bachelor of Business Administration in management from the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, in 1969, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence in banking, corporate finance and securities law from on campus in 1975. He also holds FINRA certification as a mediator, which has enhanced his ability to resolve complex disputes efficiently.
Among his professional affiliations, Mr. Moylan is a member of the Colorado Bar Association’s legal fee arbitration committee. Deeply engaged with civic organizations, he has been a board member for the YVMC Foundation since 2011, chairing its governance nominating committee since taking on that role, chairing Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide (REPS) and holding various positions with Rotary International District 5440, including assistant district governor, area governor, foundation chair and by-laws review committee since 2017. Mr. Moylan was previously active in fraternity service and served on the National Law Alumni Council at the University of Denver for two terms.
Mr. Moylan has been recognized for his numerous publications on securities regulation, commodity futures law, and dispute resolution systems. His contributions have appeared in respected publications, including the Illinois Bar Journal, the Northern Illinois University Law Review, The Journal of Futures Markets and the George Washington Law Review.
Mr. Moylan credits much of his success to active involvement with Theta Chi Fraternity, which provided him with valuable leadership opportunities and professional connections that have supported his ongoing contributions to both legal practice and community service. Looking ahead, he intends to focus on his practice while continuing to give back to his community in Steamboat Springs through ongoing professional civic educational endeavors.
