Janie H. Martin, Esq., trial attorney at Carpenter & Associates, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in criminal defense.
Driven by a firm belief in the importance of people and second chances, Ms. Martin has forged a career of more than 20 years in law. She began her career as a prosecutor in Dallas County before becoming a public defender with the Dallas County Public Defender’s Office. Throughout her work as a public defender, Ms. Martin was guided by her view that no one should be judged based on one day or moment in their lives. She has been committed to helping people when they’re at their most vulnerable.
Remaining with the Public Defender’s Office through 2025, Ms. Martin became a felony trial division supervisor for the Dallas County Veterans Treatment Court in 2010. This specialty court was designed for handling cases related to veterans charged with criminal offenses, also known as Justice-Involved Veterans. Ms. Martin played a key role in advocating for the creation of the Dallas County Veterans Treatment Court, preparing a path for Justice-Involved Veterans to reintegrate into society by seeking treatment for issues that contributed to their alleged criminal behavior. She considers this portion of her professional life to be her most noteworthy achievement thus far.
Building on her decades of experience, Ms. Martin joined Carpenter & Associates as a trial attorney in 2025. A well-regarded law firm with high expectations for its attorneys, Carpenter & Associates offers representation in criminal and civil claims, including family law. Ms. Martin heads up the organization’s criminal section but also takes on some civil cases. She turns her expertise toward ensuring that clients receive the best possible defense and are treated with respect throughout the process.
Ms. Martin’s performance in the field was born of her academic journey. She obtained a bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin. Subsequently, Ms. Martin earned a Juris Doctor from The University of Oklahoma College of Law.
As a commitment to her field, Ms. Martin has been active with several industry-related organizations. She served on the board of the Dallas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association for 10 years. Additionally, Ms. Martin maintains membership in the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. In giving back to her community, she has contributed as a board member of the Foundation for Probation Empowerment and volunteers with various veterans initiatives.
Well-regarded for her achievements, Ms. Martin has been the recipient of a number of accolades. She has been granted credentials and certifications from the National Association of Counties (NACo), the NACo High Performance Leadership Academy, the Professional Development Academy, the National Association of Public Defense and the Dallas County Leadership Academy. In 2015, Ms. Martin was named the Rookie of the Year by the Dallas Criminal Lawyers Association, as well as the Dallas County Specialty Court Attorney of the Year. She credits her success to her perseverance and skills at problem-solving, as well as the strong relationships she has built over her years of practicing law.
Beyond her primary vocation, Ms. Martin is a devoted wife and a loving mother to two daughters. Outside of work hours, she enjoys horseback riding, scuba diving and traveling. Looking ahead, Ms. Martin is eager to continue making a meaningful impact on Carpenter & Associates, with a particular focus on encouraging a client-centered approach to representation. Beyond simply providing legal counsel, she aims to help clients recognize and address underlying issues that may have contributed to their arrests. Ms. Martin is dedicated to empowering those she works with — not just in order to help them win their current court cases, but to improve their lives moving forward.
