Ms. Witkamp has established herself as a distinguished figure in arbitration, with a career spanning over 20 years. Currently, she serves as an international arbitrator with ArbDB Chambers Ltd. and manages her own practice, Marieke Witkamp LLC, where she oversees arbitration cases as the chair and sole arbitrator. Based in Texas, Ms. Witkamp’s responsibilities include preparing for preliminary meetings with counsel, drafting awards, writing articles and giving presentations. Additionally, Ms. Witkamp contributes to the judiciary as a substitute judge at the Court of Rotterdam and the Netherlands Commercial Court.

Before her present endeavors, Ms. Witkamp was a judge at the Court of Rotterdam from 2019 to 2023, specializing in maritime law, commercial contracts and insurance law. Her tenure as a judge was marked by her appointment as one of only four maritime judges in the Netherlands, a role she held with great pride. While working internationally, Ms. Witkamp served as a substitute judge between 2010 and 2019.

Ms. Witkamp’s international legal career began in 2009 when she moved to Qatar. She worked as a legal adviser for the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011 organizing committee and later as a senior legal adviser at the Aspire Zone Foundation. Her expertise expanded further when she joined K&L Gates in Qatar as a construction and litigation associate from 2017 to 2019. During this period, Ms. Witkamp also maintained her connection with the Dutch judiciary by returning annually for court hearings.

In preparation for her future in this sector, Ms. Witkamp earned a Master of Laws from Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2003 and a second Master of Laws in U.S. law from the University of Houston Law Center in 2017. Her education has been complemented by being admitted to practice by the Texas Bar Association. Ms. Witkamp also received several other professional designations, including a diploma in international maritime arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a certified mediator credential.

Ms. Witkamp’s professional affiliations reflect her commitment to excellence in arbitration and law. She is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the Texas Bar, the American Bar Association, the Arbitral Women, the London Maritime Arbitrators Association and the Houston Maritime Arbitrators Association. Ms. Witkamp was also elected as a fellow of the FCIArb.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Ms. Witkamp is actively involved in civic activities, such as supporting United Women of United Way and engaging in pro bono mediation work. Her contributions to the field are further evidenced by her numerous publications on arbitration and maritime law, including co-authoring “MUR Shipping – A Comparative Analysis” with James M. Turner KC.

Ms. Witkamp’s dedication to learning and open-mindedness towards different dispute resolution perspectives have been pivotal in her success. She aims to become one of the top U.S. arbitrators for commercial disputes, a desire drawn from her diverse experiences across jurisdictions.
