Beverly Grant Johnson, owner of Beverly Grant Law Firm PS, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in legal services.

With nearly four and a half decades of experience to her credit, Ms. Johnson has established a successful career in legal services, specializing in personal injury, discrimination, and hostile work environments. Since 2013, she has excelled as the owner of Beverly Grant Law Firm PS and has been an official member of Lawyers of Distinction since 2023. Her experience includes serving as a Pierce County Superior Court judge from 2003 to 2013, attorney and partner at Grant & Grant Law Offices from 1997 to 2003, and attorney at Law Offices of Beverly Grant & Associates from 1992 to 1997.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Johnson served as general counsel at Davies Pearson et al from 1988 to 1992, owner of the Law Offices of Beverly Johnson & Associates from 1983 to 1988, and an attorney at McGavitt, Burgess Law Firm from 1980 to 1983. She also clerked for a federal judge from 1978 to 1980 and began her legal journey as a public defender for juvenile court. Additionally, she serves as a board member for the Lenny Wilkens Foundation, which funds organizations that help young people reach their full potential while honoring their dignity and self-respect, regardless of circumstances, and the American Red Cross, and as vice president of a ski club.

Laying a solid educational foundation, Ms. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts from the University of Washington in 1973, a Juris Doctor from the University of Washington School of Law in 1976, and a master’s degree in judicial studies from the University of Nevada at Reno. Additionally, she is a member of the California Bar Association and the Washington State Bar Association. Her career is marked by historic achievements, including being the first African American female superior court judge in Pierce County and the first African American Daffodil Princess. Inspired by her father’s role as a director during an anti-poverty program, she decided in seventh grade to pursue a legal career, motivated by the independence and pride of those seeking legal assistance rather than handouts. She remains deeply committed to giving back to her community, collaborating with Lenny Wilkens to provide health facilities for disadvantaged families and mentoring young girls by introducing them to the legal profession and cultural experiences.

Reflecting on her path, Ms. Johnson notes an early case where she represented a woman pressured to compromise her integrity to advance in her job, which sparked her passion for addressing sexual harassment cases. At a time when sexual harassment was not legally recognized as sex discrimination, she advocated for its recognition, working on cases based on common law and precedents. Another notable case involved defending a man wrongfully terminated for filing a worker’s compensation claim, despite opposition from company executives. Her efforts contributed to later legislative changes to prevent such injustices. She attributes her success to her unwavering passion for the law, dedication to helping others, and a commitment to giving back to her community. She emphasizes humility as a guiding principle, acknowledging that success is not achieved in isolation and that remaining grounded is essential for navigating personal and professional challenges.
