Following in the footsteps of her father and brother, Ms. Carter has pursued a successful career as a lawyer for nearly 30 years. Since 1996, she has held the position of partner for Carter Carter Fries & Grunschlag. Ms. Carter specializes in employment law and regularly collaborates with out-of-state lawyers to help them navigate California’s complex employment laws. She aids her clients—usually employers themselves—in avoiding litigation or smoothly resolving any legal issues that arise. Ms. Carter prides herself on a holistic approach to law, where rather than viewing legal disputes as black-and-white situations, she puts forth the effort to understand the more nuanced perspectives. This attitude is reflected in her preference for amicable settlements rather than drawn-out court proceedings; she considers her ability to reach settlements that are amenable to both sides to be her greatest achievement.
In addition to her primary vocation, Ms. Carter has served as counsel for Telecom Asset Management LLC and of counsel for The Kullman Firm. Both of these roles revolve around labor and employment law, further solidifying her expertise in this area. Ms. Carter’s earlier experiences include working as an extern for the Honorable Robert Dossee in the California Court of Appeals’ 1st Appellate District. She has also shared her knowledge as a student teaching assistant for the University of California (UC) Law San Francisco (Formerly UC Hastings).
Before venturing onto her professional journey, Ms. Carter sought a solid education. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from the University of California Los Angeles in 1991. Subsequently, Ms. Carter earned a Juris Doctor from UC Law San Francisco (Formerly UC Hastings) in 1996. She has been admitted to the bar for the central and northern districts of California, as well as for the Ninth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals.
Ms. Carter has distinguished herself throughout the field in a number of capacities. She holds active membership in The Bar Association of San Francisco and The State Bar of California. Ms. Carter has contributed to the advisory panel for the Committee on Nonprofit Organizations for the American Bar Association and to the Labor and Employment Law Section of the California Lawyers Association. She helped write the Equal Pay Act Report for the American Bar Association and regularly offers talks on liability issues for nonprofit organizations. Ms. Carter attributes her success to the support she has received from multiple friends and family, as well as her passion for research and problem-solving. She particularly acknowledges her father, James Carter, as a mentor and inspiration.
Outside of her professional life, Ms. Carter enjoys fly fishing, attending concerts, camping, reading and horseback riding. Her love of horses is also showcased in her pro bono legal work for various nonprofits, with a focus on animal rescue and equine care. While Ms. Carter has started to think about retirement in the future, she is committed to helping as many people as possible through her work until she reaches that point. Additionally, she is eagerly learning to play the guitar.
