Beginning his career as a law clerk to a senior judge at the U.S. District Court of South Dakota in Sioux Falls between 1981 and 1983, Mr. Marshall further served as a summer staff attorney at Davenport, Evans et al in Sioux Falls in 1981, an associate and partner at Bangs, McCullen, Butler, Foye & Simmons in Rapid City between 1983 and 1996, and an attorney at Johnson, Heidepriem, Miner & Marlow between 1996 and 2001.
Mr. Marshall supported his professional ambitions with an education at the University of South Dakota, which he obtained utilizing a Marshall McKusick scholarship and a Kelton Lynn scholarship. Initially earning a Bachelor of Science in economics education in 1977, he eventually graduated from the aforementioned university with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1981. A fellow of both the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and the International Arbitrators and Mediators, he has remained engaged in his field as a member of the American Association for Justice, the American Bar Association, the State Bar of South Dakota, and the American Arbitration Association. Mr. Marshall likewise served as counsel for the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame and the past chairman and vice chairman for the South Dakota Board of Pardons and Paroles.
Born in Huron, Mr. Marshall values personal satisfaction over external validation, focusing on doing his best for those he represents while balancing his professional duties and personal life principles. Notably, he has maintained his sobriety since 2010, which has profoundly influenced his perspective on life and work. Looking toward the future, Mr. Marshall plans to retire and focus on meaningful contributions outside his legal career, including an opportunity to operate as an executive for a startup nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing substance abuse and human trafficking issues in the Sturgis area.
