With nearly three decades of experience, Ms. Stein has built a successful career in legal services, specializing in commercial transactions, data privacy, data security, regulatory compliance, and artificial intelligence. She currently excels as a consulting attorney at Tenor Legal, has been serving as a consulting attorney for various companies since 2022, and is an official member of Lawyers of Distinction. Her prior experience includes roles such as assistant general counsel, privacy and compliance at Pantheon Systems Inc. from 2020 to 2022, senior director of global commercial contracts at TaskUs Inc. from 2018 to 2020, senior counsel at Apple Inc. from 2013 to 2018, principal at Insurance Law Group from 2001 to 2013, and principal at Troop Steuber Pasich Reddick & Tobey from 1996 to 2000.
Ms. Stein holds memberships with the International Association of Privacy Professionals and volunteers as a judge advisor for VEX Robotics, Robotics Education and Competition Foundation. In 2023, she was nominated to Lawyers of Distinction for corporate and transactional law. Laying a solid educational foundation, she earned a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center, cum laude, in 1987, a Master of Laws in risk management and compliance from Texas A&M University in 2022, and is admitted to the Washington Bar and the State Bar of California. She is also a Certified Information Privacy Professional through the International Association of Privacy Professionals. Reflecting on her path, she credits her grandparents on her father’s side, both remarkable attorneys, as her primary inspiration. Her grandmother, in particular, excelled at Cornell Law School, ranking among the top three in her class at a time when few women pursued law, sparking her passion for the legal profession.
Ms. Stein takes great pride in being hired as Apple’s first insurance lawyer. Initially, she focused on insurance and reinsurance matters, including policy wording, negotiating settlements with insurers, and creating insurance provisions and contracts. Her role soon expanded to include work on leases for flagship retail sites and the construction of Apple’s iconic “spaceship” headquarters. Additionally, she contributed to various projects at Cisco Systems, drafting new form agreements for hardware service and lean manufacturing contracts, and worked on a high-profile motorsports stunt event for Mattel’s Hot Wheels brand.
In the coming years, Ms. Stein is working toward retirement but remains open to serving as an assistant general counsel or deputy general counsel, overseeing AI development, privacy, commercial transactions, and possibly products. With significant experience in product counseling, she believes she could contribute even more to this area if given the opportunity. She is also looking forward to relaxing while leading or co-leading a commercial group in-house. A dedicated mentor, she has often been told she is a great teacher, and she hopes to return to those roots. When advising aspiring professionals, Ms. Stein emphasizes the importance of speaking up and asking questions. She believes there should never be hesitation in asking questions related to the work, and if someone discourages this, it may be a sign that they aren’t the right person to work for.
