Stephen K. Burt, Esq., managing attorney and owner of S.K. Burt Law, PA, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in immigration and family law.
Atty. Burt has proven his proficiency at adapting and growing across two successful careers. His professional journey began in 2013 when he became the director of bands for Faith Christian Academy. In this role, Atty. Burt taught more than 300 students ranging from third to twelfth grade and coordinated band trips. Across four years with Faith Christian Academy, he was able to witness great development from his students, culminating in one of the groups he taught winning at a band festival in New Orleans during his final year as a teacher.
Although he was passionate about music, Atty. Burt felt pulled to pursue a more personally fulfilling path. That led to accepting the position of student representative for Barry University’s Immigration Clinic in 2018, followed by becoming a legal representative at The Immigrants’ Rights Center the same year. In 2019, Atty. Burt opened his own firm, S.K. Burt Law, PA, where he serves as managing attorney to this day. He specializes in the intersection of immigration and family law, including handling cases of divorce and marriage and how they will affect immigration status. Atty. Burt also provides support to victims in domestic violence cases and helps those victims navigate resulting immigration issues. He is proud to employ a diverse staff, including immigrants and minorities, bolstering the firm’s efforts with a well-rounded understanding of the struggles faced by many of its clients.
Before venturing onto his vocational path, Atty. Burt sought a strong academic foundation that would support both of his careers. His education began with a Bachelor of Arts in music from the University of South Carolina in 2011 and a Bachelor of Music in music teacher education from Evangel University in 2012. Atty. Burt remained at the latter institution to obtain a Master of Music in music teacher education in 2013. Upon shifting into the legal field in 2017, he enrolled in an internship at Disability Independence Group Inc. Subsequently, Atty. Burt earned a Juris Doctor in immigration law, educational law and comparative law from the Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law at Barry University in 2018. He has been admitted to the bar by the United States District Courts for the middle, northern and southern districts of Florida.
To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Atty. Burt has maintained his professional affiliation with a number of pertinent organizations. He is involved with the Orange County Bar Association, the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the International Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, among others. Atty. Burt also contributes to multiple divisions of The Florida Bar, including the Solo and Small Firm Section, the International Law Section and the Family Law Section.
Noted for his achievements in the field, Atty. Burt has received numerous notable accolades. S.K. Burt Law, PA, was named New Business of the Year by the Metropolitan Business Association Inc.’s Pride Chamber in 2021 and Small Business of the Year by the same organization in 2023. Atty. Burt was listed in 40 Under 40 in 2023 and has been featured in the Orlando Business Journal. He credits his success to diligence, patience, self-motivation, commitment to continued growth and his ability to nurture the relationships he has forged throughout his professional life.
Outside of his career, Atty. Burt finds joy in traveling, playing rugby and experiencing new things, especially food and cultures that he hasn’t yet been exposed to. He also stays connected to his past as a music teacher by playing saxophone. Looking ahead, Atty. Burt plans to continue supporting the growth of S.K. Burt Law, PA, which has seen an uptick in business following the challenges of the pandemic. Additionally, he hopes to launch either a nonprofit arm of his firm or a separate organization that can help raise money toward financial barriers faced by immigrants and other family law clients. This long-held goal further demonstrates Atty. Burt’s compassionate approach to leadership.
