Anthony D. Kershaw, Esq.

Title: Managing Attorney
Company: Essex Newark Legal Services
Location: Woodbridge, New Jersey, United States

Anthony D. Kershaw, Esq., managing attorney at Essex Newark Legal Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in legal services.

With nearly a decade of experience to his credit, Mr. Kershaw has built a successful career in legal services, specializing in housing. He has excelled as the managing attorney for the Tenancy Courthouse Office at Essex-Newark Legal Services since 2024, where he oversees the unit, reviews cases thoroughly to identify any legal defenses, and files motions to bring cases back before a judge for reconsideration. Prior to this, he served as a staff attorney at Essex-Newark Legal Services in 2023, a medical device sales specialist at Arthrex from 2021 to 2022, and trained in surgical robotics at Zimmer Biomet from 2020 to 2021. In 2016, he served as managing editor of research and writing for Albany’s Government Law Review and authored “Polygraph Evidence: Circuit Court Approaches to Admissibility” for the Center for Judicial Process. He has been a member of the Bar Association since 2022, Lambda Alpha Sigma at Kean University since 2010, and Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, since 2009, and he dedicates his time to Angels For Action and the Community Food Bank of New Jersey.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Kershaw has been recognized with a Third Place Championship Ring in 2022 and as a finalist in the Karen C. McGovern Senior Prize Trials Competition at Albany Law School in 2017. Laying a solid educational foundation for these successes, he earned a Bachelor of Science in political science and government, graduating cum laude from Kean University in 2011. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Albany Law School in 2017, pursued further education in orthopedic reconstruction and trauma, and obtained certification in medical devices. Reflecting on his path, he initially started his career in law and passed the bar exam in 2018. He faced challenges transitioning into the legal field due to job market difficulties and the COVID-19 pandemic. After shifting to the medical devices industry, he found the work engaging but financially unviable due to a commission-based system and a restrictive non-compete agreement, which led him to return to law.

Mr. Kershaw takes great pride in his ability to practice trial law. During law school, he was a member of the trial team, coached freshmen, and competed in various competitions. He excelled as the third-best advocate in his class and secured second place for his team in criminal defense. He attributes his success to his close-knit family, which provided him with the security needed to focus on his career. In the coming years, he plans to become a law professor, specializing in evidence law and trial tactics. He also aims to establish his own housing clinic and coach a trial team to compete in trial and evidence production. Additionally, he hopes to achieve certification as a civil trial attorney.
