Denise Ivana Perales, JSM, founder and attorney at Verela Non Toxic Place LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in environmental legal services.

Ms. Perales has established a successful career focused on environmental law and environmental products and services. She currently excels as an attorney, and as the founder of Verela Non Toxic Place, LLC, a role she has held since 2018. Verela Non-Toxic Place LLC specializes in the sale of environmental products, with a primary focus on the United States market. Additionally, the company offers environmental services, catering to clientele in Mexico. She also specializes in environmental law in Mexico, leveraging her expertise to assist individuals and communities in addressing environmental issues. Prior to this, she was a professor of law at the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez, Campus San Luis Potosi, Mexico, from 2014 to 2015, Tecnologico de Monterrey, Campus Chihuahua in 2014, and Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez in 2020. She also served as an associate at Baker McKenzie from 2005 to 2015 and worked as a trainee intern at the Office of Air and Radiation, United States Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, DC, in 2003.

Laying a solid educational foundation, Ms. Perales earned a Bachelor of Laws from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2004, and a Juris Scientiae Magister, Master of the Science of Law, from Stanford University in 2012, and is licensed to practice law in Mexico. While acquiring her master’s degree, she conducted empirical research focusing on the perspectives of residents from two small cities along the Mexico-United States border regarding the level of protection afforded to natural resources in the region, aiming to assess the effectiveness of government authorities in addressing environmental issues affecting the area’s natural resources, and contributed to over 100 climate change projects in Mexico. Additionally, she authored a book titled “Governance and Informal Environmental Laws at the U.S.–Mexico Border: Three Case Studies Based on the Perception of the Inhabitants of the Cities of Presidio, Texas, and Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico,” which presents her research findings and insights derived from the study. Additionally, she is the founder of Green Border LLC, and serves as president and group lead of El Paso del Norte Stanford Alumni. She has served for 6 years different leadership positions for Boy Scouts of America (now named Scouting America), and received the Extra Miler Award in 2021.

Reflecting on her career, Ms. Perales takes great pride in her various contributions, and in the invaluable support of her husband, and all her family. Through her company, she provided air purifiers to schools and businesses along the Mexico-United States border during the pandemic, and she has also partnered with a laboratory in Berkeley to assess the water quality along the border to raise awareness about important water quality issues in the region. Additionally, she won two landmark cases related to water resources in Mexico. In the first case, she successfully prevented a street from being constructed over a section of the river, setting a precedent that recognized residents’ rights to defend their water resources in Mexican courts. In the second case, she blocked a company from building a gas station in a neighborhood along the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, protecting public health in the area. Looking to the future, she aspires to continue growing her business and nonprofit organization to benefit the environment and the residents of the Mexico-United States border region.
