Reflecting on his path, Mr. Jennings was born and raised in Santa Maria, where his father was a judge for 25 years. Growing up locally in the courthouse, he interned for one of his father’s good friends, who was a local defense attorney. His father, a former public defender, suggested he pursue this route and gain experience. He was able to secure a job out of law school as a public defender and worked there for about seven years. During this time, he gained trial experience, handling a high volume of cases ranging from felonies to misdemeanors. In 2017, he took a job with the conflicts defense team, where they handled all the heavy cases. He worked there for a couple of years and dealt with the notorious MS13 case, one of the rare local town cases and one of California’s most complicated conspiracy cases. He then became a court-appointed attorney, but the trial was delayed due to COVID-19. He then began working as a San Luis Obispo Public Defender.
Mr. Jennings takes great pride in his work as the court-appointed attorney in the MS13 case. This group had a well-established method of operation and was very efficient in carrying out homicides. It took law enforcement years to catch up to them. The FBI and ATF were involved and were able to gather a lot of evidence through wiretaps.
Mr. Jennings attributes his success to his ability to be himself. He also established a good working relationship with opposing counsels and judges. Due to his credibility and strategic approach to legal battles, he has earned the respect of the district attorney’s office. He continuously strives to collaborate with others to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes for both parties involved in the case. In the coming years, he is eager to establish his private practice as a top performer in his field, aims to become the go-to person for legal matters, and plans to take up private criminal cases in Saint Louis County.
