Building on a career spanning nearly 30 years, Ms. Bushnell serves as deputy general counsel at Jasper Ridge Partners, L.P. as of 2024. Her duties focus on advising clients on financial matters, especially how taxes will be affected by wealth transfers and charitable contributions. Ms. Bushnell’s professional history includes roles as a partner at Venable LLP and counsel at Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP. From 2005 to 2011, she contributed as of counsel for Barulich Dugoni & Suttman Law Group Inc. (formerly Barulich Dugoni Law Group Inc.). Ms. Bushnell’s professional life started as an associate attorney for Gunderson Dettmer’s Tax Group in 1997.
In both corporate positions and her private practice, Ms. Bushnell has fostered a reputation for confidently handling complex legal scenarios. She has been trusted to provide fiduciary guidance to wealthy clients, showcasing her capacity for dealing with complicated issues, such as estates with multiple onshore and offshore accounts. Ms. Bushnell is especially proud to have represented the children of Robin Williams. Her career highlights include serving on the board for Venable LLP, which she considers a major achievement for a woman in a male-dominated field.
Ms. Bushnell’s success was born of her academic journey. She obtained a Juris Doctor from the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco (formerly the University of California, Hastings College of the Law), graduating magna cum laude in 1997. In 2001, Ms. Bushnell earned a Master of Laws in taxation from the New York University School of Law. Since establishing herself in her field, she has embraced mentorship, particularly seeking to empower other women looking to get into law and financial management. Ms. Bushnell regularly shares her insight through public presentations at such events as the American Bar Association’s Tax Group meetings, Silicon Valley attorney roundtables and Continuing Education of the Bar sessions.
As a commitment to her field, Ms. Bushnell is active with several industry-related organizations. She maintains membership in the American Bar Association and The State Bar of California and serves as a board member for the Foster County Bar Association. While in college, Ms. Bushnell was admitted to the Thurston Society, which accepted students in the top 10% of their class, and The Order of the Coif, an honor society for law students. Her achievements have been recognized with such accolades as being named a Super Lawyer in 2022 and being listed in the Daily Journal’s Top Women Lawyers in 2015. Ms. Bushnell attributes her success to perseverance, authenticity and the encouragement of her mentors, including many men who understood the difficulty of progressing in the field as a woman.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Ms. Bushnell is well-regarded for her civic advocacy. She has contributed as a volunteer to the Girl Scouts and is a passionate advocate for allergy education. Ms. Bushnell also provides pro bono legal work for the Boys & Girls Club of San Francisco. Though she’s no longer involved with the organization, she volunteered her expertise as an attorney to help found Football Camp for the Stars, which supports athletes with Down syndrome.
Beyond her professional life, Ms. Bushnell is a dedicated wife and mother to two children. Looking to the future, she is eager to grow into her new role at Jasper Ridge Partners, L.P. Ms. Bushnell plans to offer training to her colleagues to share her insight into wealth management issues. She’s excited to explore the opportunities afforded to her by shifting from a law firm to an in-house position. Additionally, Ms. Bushnell wants to dedicate more of her time and energy to supporting women in professional roles, especially those trying to balance their careers with family life. Her extensive experience in navigating work-life balance and transcending gender bias and stereotypes is sure to be a boon to others.
