With years of experience in civil litigation to her credit, Ms. Newell has excelled as the owner of Open Book Appeals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida since 2023, where she likewise practices as an appellate attorney. In this position, she represents clients regarding civil litigation, family law, commercial litigation, property law, and personal injury appeals law at the state and federal levels. Moreover, Ms. Newell engages in consultations with trial attorneys, conducts legal research to support appeals on previous judgments, reviews transcripts and trial dockets, and helps determine appealability at testimonies and select trial court filings.
Outside of her responsibilities with Open Book Appeals, Ms. Newell has been active as an adjunct professor of advanced legal research and writing at the Benjamin L. Crump College of Law, part of St. Thomas University, since 2023. She has also served as an appellate attorney and consultant operating out of her eponymous private practice, Erin Pogue Newell, PLLC since 2019. During this time, Ms. Newell worked as an appellate attorney with Florida Appeals from 2021 to 2023.
Ms. Newell began her career as an intern associate with Mary Knoll in the United Nations Office of Global Concerns in 2011. She subsequently refined her skills as an attorney with Wasson & Associates, Chartered between 2012 and 2017. After briefly practicing as an associate appellate attorney with Boyd & Jenerette, P.A. in 2017, she found success as an associate partner with unKAP-ed Legal, PLLC, dba Motiondrafting.com, from 2017 to 2019. Having proudly presented oral arguments in front of all six of Florida’s District Courts of Appeal, Ms. Newell has also represented clients before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit.
Before embarking on her professional path, Ms. Newell pursued an education at Manhattan College, from which she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 2007. She concluded her studies at St. Thomas University in 2012, graduating from the Benjamin L. Crump College of Law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. Following these accomplishments, Ms. Newell passed her bar examination in Florida and became affiliated with the Broward County Bar Association.
Beyond her primary responsibilities within the field, Ms. Newell has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her immediate circles. With The Florida Bar, she has contributed as an attorney volunteer in the Young Lawyers Division, where she has provided her time and resources to the COVID-19 Pro Bono Legal Response Project and Disaster Legal Services, as well as a pro bono appellate attorney in the Appellate Practice Section and a member of the Family Law Section. Furthermore, Ms. Newell has offered her expertise to other attorneys as the author of published articles in various legal journals.
In light of her impressive undertakings, Ms. Newell has been recognized as a Rising Star with Super Lawyers and a Rising Star in the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar in 2023. She attributes her success to her strong mentors and collaborators, from whom she has been able to learn valuable lessons that she has utilized in her own practice. She was driven to her present post by her desire to maintain a work-life balance and maintain the freedom to work with whomever she chooses. Looking toward the future, Ms. Newell hopes to continue serving her community while collaborating with her sister, who is also an attorney.
