He began his career as a digital design engineer and patent attorney trainee at Honeywell from 1996 to 2003. He worked as a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office from 2004 to 2006. At The Farrell Law Firm, P.C., he contributed as an associate patent attorney from 2006 to 2008. He garnered a stellar reputation as an associate intellectual property attorney at Cozen OConnor in 2008 and at WALL & TONG, LLP from 2008 to 2013.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Coffy pursued an education at Norwalk State Technical College where he earned an associate of science in electrical engineering in 1981. He continued his academic efforts at Fairfield University, accruing a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1986. At the Florida Institute of Technology, he completed a Master of Science in electrical engineering in 1993. He pursued a PhD in technology management at Stevens Institute of Technology in 1999 before concluding his studies at Seton Hall University School of Law, graduating with a Juris Doctorate in 2003. He has been licensed to practice law by the State Bar of New Jersey, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Coffy has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He found success in his co-authored work titled “The Value of Your Idea$: Make Intellectual Property Work For You” in 2020. He co-invented a low-friction apparatus for which he secured a patent. In addition to his primary vocation, he remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Academy of Court-Appointed Neutrals, and the Garden State Bar Association.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Coffy has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was presented with a Congressional Certificate of Special Recognition by the Honorable Congressperson Yvette Clarke in 2011 and received New York City Council Citations from Council Member Matthieu Eugene and Council-member Jumaane D. Williams in 2011. Additionally, he received The Best Presenter Award from HABNET in 2011.
