Stephen J. Obie, retired attorney adviser at U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in technology advising.
With 32 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Obie has excelled as attorney advisor to the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission from 2021 to 2023, at which time he retired. He began his career as an attorney for Judge Bowman and Judge John R. Gibson at the Staff Attorneys’ Office for the United States Court of Appeals of the Eighth Circuit. He established himself as a law clerk for Judge Hanneson of the New York State Court of Claims from 1991 to 1993 before being recruited as an associate at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson from 1995 to 1998. He garnered a stellar reputation as head of the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s New York office in 2002.
Between 1998 and 2014, Mr. Obie served in various positions within the Division of Reinforcement of the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission, including as acting director from 2008 to 2010 and head of the New York office from 2010 to 2014. He contributed at Jones Day as partner in financial markets and energy from 2014 to 2021. Concurrent to many of these postings, he remained active as an attorney with his own private practice.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Obie pursued an education at Drew University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in law in 1988. He concluded his academic efforts at the University at Buffalo School of Law, graduating with a Juris Doctorate in 1991. He has been licensed to practice law by the Missouri Bar, the New York State Bar Association, and the Bar Association of the District of Columbia.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Obie has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He was a trustee of Walden United Methodist Church. He contributed to several articles and professional journals, including pieces published in the Harvard Business Review and the New York Times. He was featured in “The Fix,” written by Vaughn McKay, “The Spider Web,” written by David N. Wright, and “The South Florida Guard,” written by Victor Lazari.
In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Obie remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a member of the District of Columbia Bar, the New York State Bar, and Phi Beta Kappa. In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Obie has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was involved in the first public offering of a tokenized security in 2016. He received the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Chairman’s Award for Excellence and Trailblazer Awards from the New York Law Journal Magazine and the National Law Journal.
