Paul Meggett, Esq., General Counsel at Appalachian State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education law and crisis management.

With more than 20 years of expertise to his credit, Mr. Meggett has found much success as general counsel for Appalachian State University since 2018. Having previously worked as senior legal counsel for the Corporate In-House Counsel Group from 2017 to 2018, he excelled in a number of positions at the Charlotte School of Law between 2011 and 2017, including as an interim dean, associate professor of law and an assistant professor of law. In the years prior, he was active as an adjunct professor of law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2004 to 2010, assistant university counsel for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1999 to 2011, and associate general counsel for UNC Healthcare from 1999 to 2011. Mr. Meggett began his career as a law clerk for Chief Justice Burley B. Mitchell, Jr. of the Supreme Court of North Carolina from 1998 to 1999.

Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Meggett pursued an education at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, from which he earned a diploma in 1987. He continued his academic efforts with a Bachelor of Science in program management at North Carolina State University in 1995. He concluded his studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998, graduating from the School of Law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. Following these accomplishments, Mr. Meggett was admitted to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Meggett has accrued several accolades throughout his career. In 2020, he was recognized among the Top 100 National Black Lawyers. Prior to this honor, he was presented with the 2009 Citizen Lawyer Award from the North Carolina State Bar, the Gressman/Pollitt Appellate Advocacy Award from the University of North Carolina School of Law and the African American Academic Achievement Award from the North Carolina State University. Attributing his success to the many people throughout his life who have acknowledged his potential and supported him, including his amazing family, Mr. Meggett is incredibly proud to positively effect the lives of others while continuing to grow and mentoring the next generation of legal professionals.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Meggett has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his immediate circles, including the North Carolina Minority Executive Roundtable, the Charlotte Housing Authority, the Parks, Culture & Recreation Advisory Board, the Union Symphony Society, New Hope Elementary School and the North Carolina Prisoners Legal Services, Inc., to name a few. Having initially aspired to become an athletic director, he was drawn to the field of law after being forced to represent himself after a personal encounter with identity theft. In the coming years, Mr. Meggett hopes to advance in his career while helping to complete Appalachian State University’s compliance structure and legal arm.
