John R. Pitts, founding chair and managing principal of Texas Star Alliance, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in business lobbying.
With more than 30 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Pitts has cultivated a fulfilling career as a seasoned legal professional. Well-versed in representing various businesses and nonprofit organizations and businesses, he currently serves as the founding chair of the Texas Star Alliance, which he established in 2011. Through the lobbying firm, he represents numerous brands and companies through the Texas legislative and executive branches. In recent years, Mr. Pitts has placed much of his focus on confronting the shortage of nurses and medical coverage in the state. As part of his tenure within the company, he formerly operated as a managing principal for the firm.
Mr. Pitts previously gained valuable expertise working with a wide variety of businesses in the field of law. Some of these include Akin Gump Hauer & Feld LLP, Vinson & Elkins LLP, the Office of the Lieutenant Governor for the State of Texas, and the Texas Senate. Throughout his career, he has been well-regarded for representing clients in various industries, including Fortune 500 companies, major trade associations, and other national nonprofit organizations. Outside of his primary endeavors, Mr. Pitts remains active as a civic-minded citizen in his community, participating in charitable efforts with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Houston Collaborative for Children, The Hope Center Houston, and LIFE Houston. Likewise, he founded Texas Affordable Housing Congress.
Prior to embarking on his vocational journey, Mr. Pitts pursued a formal education. As a student of the Southern Methodist University, he achieved a Bachelor of Science in accounting in 1968, a Master of Business Administration in 1969, and a Juris Doctor in 1972. Additionally, he later achieved a Master of Divinity at the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1987. In addition to his academic credentials, Mr. Pitts has also been licensed to practice law before the State Bar of Texas.
To commemorate professional achievements, Mr. Pitts has been recognized on numerous occasions as one of Texas’s Top Rated Lawyers through Martindale-Hubbell between 2014 and 2020. Furthermore, he has been selected by his peers as one of the Best Lawyers in the United States between 2011 and 2022. Mr. Pitts was also named the Fifth Most Influential Lobbyist in Austin through Capitol Inside and the Board Member of the Year Award via Big Brothers Big Sisters of Texas. Driven by a passion for improved government reliability, Mr. Pitts has naturally thrived in his chosen industry.
In light of his accomplished career, Mr. Pitts largely attributes his success to his dedicated work ethic and the love and support of his family. While his career has been filled with highlights, he is most notably proud to have drafted and passed Senate Bill 1, a piece of legislation pertaining to water treatment that involved developing a system for water management and creating water districts in Texas. During this time, he worked closely with the lieutenant governor and the speaker of the House to ensure the bill passed. In the coming years, Mr. Pitts intends to spearhead further efforts for passing helpful legislation in the state of Texas.
