In this role, he handles predominantly federal and multiple co-defendant criminal cases. Mr. Merlino works as a solo practitioner with the help of two paralegals and a private investigator.
Prior to his current position, Mr. Merlino was a partner with Voluck & Merlino, P.L., and previously Lieberman, Gutierrez & Merlino, P.A. He served the Broward County State Attorney’s Office as a felony trial unit prosecutor and was a supervisor in the office’s County Court Division. Alongside his formal education, Mr. Merlino is Florida death penalty qualified.
In preparation for his legal career, Mr. Merlino attended Florida International University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English literature with a minor in business administration, with honors, in 1990. Following this achievement, he graduated from the Nova Southeastern University School of Law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 2003. Mr. Merlino is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. He is also certified to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
To keep abreast of his field, Mr. Merlino has maintained affiliation with Phi Alpha Delta, Phi Eta Sigma and the English Literature Honor Society. In his spare time, he enjoys snowmobiling, scuba diving and spending time with his daughters. Both of Mr. Merlino’s daughters are state-ranked gymnasts in Florida. In the coming years, he plans to continue excelling in his private practice and hopes to find someone to carry on his professional legacy.
