Location: Detroit, Michigan, United States
Wanda Mayes, Labor Mediator at City of Detroit, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in labor negotiations.
Following obtaining a bachelor’s degree in business administration and personnel management in 1985, Ms. Mayes later continued her education with a master’s degree in dispute resolution in 1998 and Doctor of Jurisprudence in 2006, all from Wayne state University in Detroit. She served her country in the United States Air Force as an inventory management specialist with the United States Air Force from 1977 to 1981.
Ms. Mayes has excelled as a labor relation specialist for the city of Detroit for 12 years and labor mediator, facilitating the settlement of labor-management disputes, for over two decades. In this capacity, she negotiates labor contracts, resolves grievances and mediates disputes by admitting a neutral third party to the negotiations to give non-binding and confidential recommendations for settlement.
Ms. Mayes attributes her success to her love for people and being able to communicate effectively. She believes that 90% of her success is due to simply showing up. Her good work ethic and teamwork were reinforced when she was in the United States Air Force. She considers her career highlight winning the Prince 1999 Scholarship in 1983 at Wayne State University. It was a scholarship granted by Prince, the late entertainer-philanthropist who gave away scholarships in almost every city in which he played. He sent a limo and gave her tickets to the concert. With over three decades’ experience in labor negotiations, Ms. Mayes’ chief goal is to become a labor arbitrator and also to publish a book.
