Dennis Sweeney, Owner at Sweeny & Sweeny, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in criminal defense and civil and commercial litigation.
Following obtaining a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1973 from St. John’s University School of Law in Jamaica, New York, Mr. Sweeny provided exemplary service from 1973 to 1978 as assistant district attorney in Nassau County and then as principal trial attorney from 1978 to 1984 in the Homicide Bureau of the Suffolk County District Attorney.
From 1984 to 1986, Mr. Sweeny served as deputy chief of the Tort Litigation Bureau in the Suffolk County Attorney’s Office. He founded law firm Sweeny & Sweeny in 1986, whose practice concentrates on civil and commercial litigation, wills, criminal defense, personal injury and medical malpractice cases.
Mr. Sweeny attributes his success to his good training, particularly when he was in the district attorney’s office. Initially, Mr. Sweeny went into college thinking he wanted to be a dentist but he instead followed his father’s footsteps into the legal profession. Going to trial on a number of homicide and major crime cases that have notoriety and had good results over the years has been Mr. Sweeny’s most notable accomplishment. As a defense attorney, he is most proud of having been able to try one particular case involving four defendants. It was the federal government against four individuals who were principals in a farm and the Revere Armored Inc. truck company. In that case, his client was the only one who was not convicted while the others were incarcerated. In the coming years, Mr. Sweeny is looking forward to a well-deserved retirement.
