Ms. Porter initially obtained a Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota in 1983 before continuing her education with a Juris Doctor in criminal justice from the University of South Dakota in 1987. After serving as a legal secretary, Ms. Porter prospered as a partner with Banes & Collins before founding her own law firm, specializing in being a guardian ad litem, or an attorney designated by a judge to help a person who cannot come to court or protect their rights and interests for a single case.

In addition, Ms. Porter excels as an attorney and program director with the South Dakota Lawyers Assistance Program, a resource for South Dakota lawyers, law students, and their families have a drug or alcohol problem or are struggling with depression or anxiety. Earlier in her career, she had overcome a problem with alcoholism. Ms. Porter has been sober for more than 25 years and prides herself on being able to help individuals in similar situations to her own past experiences.

Ms. Porter’s many honors include Exceptional Lawyer of the Year Award from the Pennington County Bar Association, a Distinguished Rating from Martindale-Hubbell and repeated designations among America’s Most Honored Professionals, Distinguished Lawyers and America’s Most Honored Lawyers in the American Registry.

Ms. Porter became involved in the field of law because many members of her family were lawyers and attorneys throughout her youth. In the coming years, she expects to find a replacement for her program director position, but she still hopes to remain involved with aiding other lawyers with addictions. She also plans to dedicate more quality time to her husband. Ms. Porter would like to be remembered for her dedication to doing the best job she can regardless of how small her client’s case may be.
