Leighton B. Allen, Esq., Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Associate at Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in technological security.

From 2004 to 2007, Mr. Allen excelled as a technical support engineer with The Answer Group, where he provided technical support for BestBuy’s clients’ Performance Service Plans to customers and diagnosed computer hardware-related problems. He thereupon prospered from 2007 to 2015 as a physician support coordinator with HCA Healthcare, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where his responsibilities included serving as primary information technology contact specialist for approximately 300 physicians and physician offices as well as coordinating implementation, training, support, and ongoing maintenance of all systems deployed to doctors and their offices.

After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in information technology from Broward College in Florida in 2015, Mr. Allen pursued coursework toward his Juris Doctorate at the John Marshall Law School, now the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law, from 2016 to 2017. He then served a spring legal externship with Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, a summer legal internship with the Joint Commission and a fall legal externship with the American Dental Association in 2018 before earning his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2019 and serving as an extern with McAndrews, Held and Malloy in Chicago. Working in a hospital setting and seeing what was happening in the background of the hospital to comply with the new healthcare act sparked his interest in law.

Since 2020, Mr. Allen has flourished as a cybersecurity and data privacy associate with the Chicago-based law firm Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker LLP. In this role, he is responsible for handling breach response and other sensitive situations arising from the misuse of computers and related technology, following a process designed to immediately contain exposure, including conducting forensic analysis, deploying experts specially chosen to enhance protection of privileged and confidential communications. The results of such processes guide the implementation of measures designed to comply with legal obligations and prevent additional data intrusion. In the coming years, Mr. Allen hopes to become an expert in cybersecurity and data privacy law with a focus on healthcare.
