Mr. Gherardi is an attorney and entrepreneur with a practice specializing in intellectual property law, trademark licensing and development, and media production. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Fordham University, and received a scholarship to attend the New York University School of Law, where he was awarded his Juris Doctor in 1966. Before turning his focus to entertainment and copyright law, Mr. Gherardi spent two years with the United States General Services Administration, serving as the Director of Congressional Affairs between 1970 and 1972, when he joined The Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Beginning as a secretary and general counsel to the Board of Directors, he rose to become Senior Vice President before his departure in 1978.
Since 1978, Mr. Gherardi has worked in solo practice as the principal of the Law Offices of Thomas G. Gherardi and the president of Thomas G. Gherardi, P.C., where he concentrates his work in new media law, licensing and distribution. He has served as counsel for numerous documentary and television producers and helped negotiate character licensing and merchandise production deals for popular children’s television properties including Barney & Friends and Wishbone. In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Gherardi acted as an executive producer for Wolf Trap Television and the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts from 1985 until 1991, creating 21 television specials including the Emmy Award-winning “Wolf Trap Presents the Kirov Swan Lake,” and the “On Stage with Wolf Trap” series featuring performances by Tony Bennett, Wynton Marsalis, Glenn Close, and others. In 2011, Mr. Gherardi established Online Opportunities LLC, building on his interest in digital business platforms and his existing portfolio of patents for internet search and sales technologies to help other attorneys navigate complex intellectual property and technology licenses. Outside his work, Mr. Gherardi is passionate about protecting the natural beauty of St. John, Virgin Islands, and has served as a principal board member for organizations managing residential and parks land for more than 25 years.
