Title: Attorney at Law
Company: The Law Office of Jorie K. Johnson, LLC
Location: Aurora, Illinois, United States
Jorie K. Johnson, founding attorney at The Law Office of Jorie K. Johnson, LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in criminal defense and post-conviction rights restoration.
Since 2008, Ms. Johnson has practiced criminal defense law with a focus on post-conviction matters, expungement, sealing and clemency petitions and restoration of previously forfeited rights at her boutique practice, The Law Office of Jorie K. Johnson, LLC, which she began in 2010. She earned her Juris Doctor from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago after completing a judicial externship in the Cook County Fourth Municipal District Circuit Court and spending a year, prior to that, as a licensed 711 law clerk in the felony trials division of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Upon graduation, Ms. Johnson began volunteering with Cabrini Green Legal Aid and, moreover, providing pro bono legal assistance to individuals at the Cook County Annual Second Chance Summit. Ms. Johnson also volunteered at First Defense Legal Aid and even worked, for approximately a year, as a part-time staff attorney for that organization. All of these were formative experiences that influenced her decision to focus on and grow her practice in criminal defense, and, more specifically, help people restore their rights previously forfeited by past convictions. Dedicated to the idea that everyone makes mistakes, and, further, that each of us deserves a second chance at times, Ms. Johnson has spent the past decade plus preparing and arguing petitions to expunge and seal and, when those are not available remedies, petitions for executive clemency addressed to the Governor of Illinois. To date, Ms. Johnson has had a dozen petitions for clemency granted that allowed deserving individuals to pursue expungement and, in some cases, their firearm ownership privileges.
Prior to becoming an attorney, Ms. Johnson spent multiple years as a paralegal at both law firms and legal departments in various industries within “corporate America”. She holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Northwestern University which she earned in 2002. She also attended the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire for high school (Class of 1992). In recognition of her work for her clients and her dedication to justice, Ms. Johnson was named a Super Lawyers Rising Star in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and was then presented with the Thomson Reuters Super Lawyers Award in 2021. In the coming years, she hopes to begin lecturing about restorative justice and creating educational materials for other attorneys, students, as well as litigants and their families. When not working, Ms. Johnson enjoys spending time with her husband and cats, caring for exotic fish, playing her cello, and scuba diving.
